I don't have my manual with me but is it possible to turn off the front passenger airbag in a bug-eye impreza?

Yes. There is a fix for it using a certain value resistor across both contacts on the specific connector you wish to disconnect. That fools the Airbag ECU into thinking it's still plugged in. this is the same for every airbag connector from the steering wheel to the front bumper and passenger airbag.

3.3 Ohm Resistor across the connector pins.

Best place for a baby is in the back seat.. The impreza was not designed to have the Airbags turned off.

Would you really want the airbag there disconnected from the system, as the airbag ssytem is still charged, but not controlled by teh ECU anymore!!!

I've seen these airbag explosives/charges demonstrated and they will not go off accidentally. I've seen them hammered, squashed, dropped etc... It will not go off without an electrical charge. If it is disconnected it is completely disabled.

Before disconnecting the airbag, be sure to isolate the battery and disconnect the negative battery lead. You have to wait at least 10 minutes for the capacitor in the airbag's control module to discharge because the capacitor carries enough charge to launch the airbag system in cases where it loses an electrical connection or ignition just before a crash. Another thing to avoid is touching the metal pins on the airbag's connector with your fingers so as not to accidentally deploy the airbag due to a static charge from you so make sure you are grounded using an anti-static grounding strap. Lastly, the airbag fuses have to be deactivated as well. Check your car's workshop manual/electrical schematics for the location of relevant fuses.

What stevieb is saying is correct but when you have to carry a baby on the front seat because you ahve no other option having the airbag deploy can be fatal. This is why a lot of modern cars now allow you to switch the front passenger airbag right off.
