Never ever go unmanaged, I troubleshoot networks for a living.

Depends on your budget.

I prefer Cisco, but not the express 500, they are terrible, but look at HP as an alternative.

I agree. He said "cheap" though. 3com also do some good stuff.

Unmanaged is fine, its not shifting an awdul lot of data. The poe is key for a few ip phones and ip cct cameras

Do you actually need gig ethernet other than an uplink?

3com are ok but can be a bit basic/fragile. Cisco kit rarely goes wrong or fails other than the cooling fans but that normally only becomes a problem if badly sited in a dusty environment.

Draytek do reasonably priced POE switches.

Rest of their gear is bombproof.

I work for HP doing secure network management, in a lot of customer establishments we've got Cisco 3750's in and they are superb but thats only as the service provider runs EIGRP, if you don't need anything cisco proprietry then the HP ProCurve stuff is very good and reasonably priced.

Netgear GS748TP if you want all gig and poe - £750 ish with lifetime warranty

Id only spec Cisco (and pay the premium) if you need it to integrate with other Cisco kit or have plans for a huge roll out of Cisco kit and budget isnt issue

actual switching hardware at this level, is a commodity these days, and it all comes from the same few factories in China - its the software that sits on top that you pay for, and any level of support you get (without paying for "premium" packages)

...if you dont need Cisco IOS for other reasons/benefits, then its just complexity for no benefit for a novice/small business customer who doesnt have 1/2 dozen Cisco qualified network techies working for them wink

Depends on the application, there's potentially less to go wrong with an unmanaged switch.
