Ready to set my car on fire. Please help.
That's the engine in and everything connected up. It won't start though.
I'm getting the lights and fuel pump priming. The ignition relay is clicking and sometimes the solenoid for the starter clicks in but I'm not getting it turning over. Iv heard of sticky starters so as its sat for 6 months I guess it could be that but why is the starter only clicking in sometimes? Relays? Fuses? Something obvious please. Don't want to have to remove my engine again!
Thanks
Graham

Yesterday I finally got around to firing the beast up. Got to give the car credit, the battery was only flat because silly bo11ocks here failed to notice after the snow, that by chance the fuse for the fuel pump was knackered. Sitting there turning it over and over thinking the cold weather had caused it! Didn't even think about the lack of whirring come from behind me. Consequently, having fixed the fuse bit, I still had a flat battery. Following advice on here, I went to Halfords & bought a maintenance charger that fixes permanently onto the battery, that leaves an easily accessible lead in place to plug into(£24). Secondly, I bought for £60 a battery pack with built in jump leads, light, pump and 12v outlets. Thought this would come in useful for all other occasions.
So, it's all up and running, but the heater seems to have packed up. Got a feeling the fan may have been frozen when I first defrosted the car a while back.
Any clues? Everything else seems to be working ok, so does it have its own fuse or does it share one? If the fuse is ok and I've burnt the motor out, where is it? whats it from? and(like I need to ask) is it a pain to get to?
found that trawling through the search functionSo, it's all up and running, but the heater seems to have packed up. Got a feeling the fan may have been frozen when I first defrosted the car a while back.

My battery was very very dead the other morning - 3 months since I last started the car. Sounded just as you describe.
Wouldn't jump start either, but with a fully charged battery - away we go.
Charge the battery fully - rather than trickle charge, before you try anything else more drastic.
Are the headlights dim?

It was a new battery 5months ago but the car only ran for 20 mins in my driveway, its been on trickle charge a few times too. Would the car not have started with jump leads on another car even if my battery was goosed?
When you put the jump leads on the battery terminals you need to really squeeze the clips on to get a good contact otherwise it wont work, you'll be surprised at how much power your stater will try to get through those jump leads! Also, i take it you've tried putting the car in gear and rocking it to make sure nothing is jammed? hollowpockets said:
I haven't tried bump starting it but iv tried pushing it in 1st gear. It just rocks back and forth but doesn't keep going.
Put the positive jump lead to the starter solenoid and the other to the chassis, the starter should spin over, if it doesn't then the starter is duff

tried with jump leads but no joy. Its on trickle charger now though. Anyone know which fuses to check? Cheers
The fuse is behind the bulk head on the drivers side, connected to one of the cross members. If you are standing looking down on the battery you should see them. There are 4 or 5 I think, so just check them all. For maximum confusion, they are not mentioned in the owner's manual.Jim O. said:
Is the chassis ground (near the rear motor mount) hooked up? Also, is it making good contact with the frame (no corrosion or paint in the way)?
Good point ! Try taking a jump lead from the engine block to the chassis. I've had the engine earth strap break on one of my previous shopping cars. It appeared dead as a dead thing - then jump lead from block to chassis and away it went.I f you try to jump a car with a flat battery you dont tend to get the full benefit (the flat battery seems to "drag" the other one down) . Also , unless the jump leads are PROPER heavy duty ones the effect is minimal . Try brand new battery , or fully charge existing one before trying ! good luck !
