Friend has heart set on a Ferrari 328
Discussion
As an existing and long-term Ferrari owner, he approached me with questions, but I know very little about the 328.
What are the common faults to be aware of?
What should he set aside for annual running, service costs? What about contingency?
What is service interval on these cars? Any engine out jobs?
Any common corrosion issues that will need addressing?
What are they like as an ownership proposition?
Much appreciated.

Owned one for two years. They are fantastic low maintenance cars. Service them once a year with a oil, fluid, pad change check ect. This is all easy on this car. No need to take the engine out for anything really, even the belts are done in situ. And the clutch takes about an hour to change. They are easy cars to work on your self as well. The most fiddliest job are the rear spark plugs (make sure the special spark plug tool is present in the tool kit), which are up against the bulkhead due to the engine being a transverse unit. This can only be successfully be achieved by removal of the engine lid, which is no biggie.
There are two types ABS versions (convexed wheels) and non Abs versions (concave wheels). If hes a tall person over 6 foot his head will be touching the roof and his left thigh will constantly be niggled by the bloody gear stick in 5th. Oh and the electric windows are bloody sllooww
the air con is as powerful as an asthmatic ants breath.
I never had a days problem with mine at all (picture) bloody dammed fine cars and i still miss mine even now.

Everything Chaz said, I had one for 4 Years and then another for about 18 months, they are pretty much bullet proof, some indies will tell you they are the best Car Ferrari ever built however he should get a check done by a recognised specialist on any car he's thinking about, there are some bad ones out there
I have also had a few, currently on my third! I have owned many Porsches and newer Ferraris but keep coming back to the 328. Absolutely great cars with achingly beautiful lines and proportions, still in my eyes the most perferct motoring shape ever.. Must be said that they are also tough old girls with modest running costs and blessed with very little trouble spots..Built very well with good old school feel about construction and finish, good old 'nasty' paint used which although soft red, is very hardy and can shame a new Ferrari with better lustre and finish.
Values have always stayed firm - with sensible use and proper maintenance you will at worst get your money back!! I have noticed most recently that prices, as with most other 'older' stuff, have crept up along with numbers for sale down..
