Fancy getting some kind of hand held system so looking to get a 2nd hand psp. Should I go for the cheapo option of the one with discs or should I look for the latest one? Probably wont use it loads as i've got the Xbox but will be handy for those times when I'm sitting around on holiday, or sitting around at work with nothing to do. (There are occasions where we just wait around)

Try and get an older one off Ebay that already has Custom Firmware on. You can then run home brew and all sorts of stuff.

Don't get the PSP Go... it's utterly pointless.

Screen size is the same as the original PSP, plus you can't use second hand games - they all have to be downloaded at full price from the PSN, even old titles.

I got rid of mine not long after getting mine as the games catalogue was awful. Tbh id recommend one with the custom software as mentioned before and save yourself a fortune on games etc as 90% are crap imo.

We've got a ds with an sd card adaptor etc and its great, basically lets us try before we buy, can get thousands of games for it.

If you can pick an original one up cheap then they are fine IMO - I picked up GTPSP preowned the other day and its a good enough way to waste some time. If you also buy the two GTA games (Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories) then thats all you need. GTAVCS is an excellent game considering what you are playing it on, I was on it for months.

The DS is infinitely better for gaming.

Well said.

From my perspective, the DS is okay for kids, but if you want racing games there is only one option - the PSP.

That it can also be used for occasionally browsing the web is a bonus, and its pretty good for video/music.

Sure, you can browse the web on the DS, but its a pretty lousy experience.

I'd argue that Mario Kart DS is a better racing game than anything on the PSP, the disappointing Gran Turismo included. As for saying the DS is for kids, yet more uninformed 'Mario is a kids game' twaddle. There are just as many adult games on the DS and a much broader scope of different genres. If anything, the DS offers more for every age group, I doubt you'd see your Gran on a PSP, but she'd be perfectly at home on a DS.

As a media device, sure the PSP is a clear winner, but purely for games, it loses on every front to the DS, unless you're one of those folks who values shiny graphics over gameplay.

As for the Wii vs PS3, that's something else entirely and I'm firmly in the PS3 camp there.

I favour the DS over the PSP as well.

I got a PSP on launch day when they first came out, I played it a bit but then I started to tire of the games - they're not generally aimed at being portable. That is, played in small bursts. Loading times etc were a pain.

It has sat in a cupboard for about 2 years now. Great bit of kit but just not very usable for me.

I have DS as well, that gets more use as the games tend to be more accessible and playable from a portable POV, and I have a Cyclo DS which means I have about 100 games on a memory card. My GF nicked it though and I rarely get to play it any more. irked

I am quite interested in the PSP Go - when the price comes down and when someone cracks it, obviously.

Run pirated cracked games, something the old farts who moderate this place aren't terribly happy about you doing.

So I believe.

There is that, but there's so much more you can do on them too. Have a quick look around on http://www.psp-forum.com/. I don't use that forum, but just found it after a quick Google.

As for the PSP vs DS war, it's hourses for courses really. The PSP is better technically, and has 'nicer' looking games, but the DS has a larger catalogue of games. I have a PSP but I haven't used it for months, mainly because if I have downtime at home I'll stick the PS3 on. If I'm away somewhere, I'd probably take it with me to ease any boredom. Mrs Arese has a DS. They both have their merits.
