Think I've found myself a lovely speed six all the boxes are ticked going to see next weekend seller is a pH er etc
But
Should I go for an aj to have the v8 experience?
You should try as many as you can to see which you prefer - V8's are different to the SP6's but there are also differences between 4.2's and 4.5's. But

Having said that, if the SP6 is a good deal and the car is mint and you really like it then why not go for it? Do you have much experience with TVR's and Cerbera's - if not it may be worth taking someone who knows what they are looking at...theres probably no other car brand than can make an excited buyer put their hand in their pocket!
If you are asking the question then maybe you want a V8?
You have had a S6 already, surely something different might be great. But of course you can get a late S6 Cerb for 4 or 5 K less than the equiv AJP.
I have never driven a S6 so cant add any useful experiences etc....
Has this S6 been rebuilt to 2005+ spec etc - might impact the cost of ownership calcs?

Its had a rebuild late 05 and everything else sounds great obviously proof will be in the flesh but seller seems a good guy etc
There is a part of me wants an 8 but a few people have suggested reliability of an 8 isn't brill and costs are an issue with one of those needing a rebuild
Nice dilemma!

I think you have been spun a yarn re the V8s. The reliability is great on the AJPs. BUT they are getting on now. So any car with a recent rebuild is going to be a better bet (although 5 yrs since a rebuild is quite a long time now). There is a part of me wants an 8 but a few people have suggested reliability of an 8 isn't brill and costs are an issue with one of those needing a rebuild

I have a 4.5 AJP and drive it nearly every day with out drama just a big smile.
I had a Tuscan which uses the Speed six and really enjoyed the experience but I moved to a Cerbera so I could get my twin boys in the back. I kept an open mind and drove the Speed six the 4.2 and the 4.5.
I have to say that all 3 engines were very good and in the end it came down to finding the right car at the right price and spec. I honestly would have bought an AJP or a speed Six and in the end I chose a car thaty suited me and fulfilled my criterior, that just happened to be a Speed six and Im delighted with it. If an AJP had came up at the right price and spec I would have bought that too, but it didnt and I believe the SP6 cars offer great value and I got a 2003 model where as with the AJP I was looking at 1998-2000 example.
Keep an open mind and Im sure you will find the right one at the right price.

Time to get a speed 6 now surely, before everyone realises that the drop in cost for the 'unreliable' engine isn't such a problem anymore since tvr power offer 5 year warrenties. A red rose Sag has 380bhp, the standard has 350-360 so that's in good 4.2, average/unsorted 4.5 territory.
I've never tried a Sp6. When I went out looking for a Cerb I was only interested in the V8. I've nothing against the Six, but my thinking at the time was that when the day comes that I want one I'll have one in a T car where they should be. In my mind the Cerb should have that mad V8. When I can afford a Sagaris, maybe I'll have one of those with one of the TVR Power straight 6 engines.
It's irrational*, but if I wasn't then I don't think I'd be into these cars!
I would say in conclusion: grab whatever version you like - you can always flog it and get the other version

Don't forgret it's more than just the engine.
If standard, a 6 will have slightly softer longer suspension.
It will have slightly different rack to give a bit more turns lock-to-lock.
I also think it had an even longer throttle action.
I don't know if the 6 had the slightly larger 4.5 brakes or the 4.5 hydratrak LSD as standard??
TVR (apparently) wanted the 6 to be a bit more of an everyday car, and I would like to have a go in one sometime.
However, even a 6 could have had mods and different shocks fitted.
I don't think there will be any difference in everyday road performance as these cars are so over powered anyway. As Peter Wheeler said "350 BHP 1100kg makes for a very fast car"!
