After the oil pump/oil pressure problem the 420's engine ran fine but I thought I'd better whip the heads and bottom end off to check the bores and bearings respectively. All Okay.
Checked the head chambers & they leak thus need to re-seat the valves. Well might as well fit new seals and springs and do triple valve seat job.....
Bottom end is okay but since it's apart best to fit new shells.......... Easier to take the engine out to check and refit stuff - then find clutch is on it's last legs. Just check the adjustable followers - some damaged ...........new set. Also a leaky gearbox input shaft ............new seal...
Give up I'm not looking anymore. 4 hour quick check and all is well now exceeds £1k!!
Guess it'll be the dog's firkin when it's done -- Never seen a head with so much metal removed from the ports before

Tas, on my engine the ports are so wide the web between them is like a razor blade: is that enough or should I get the die grinder out?

Mine had. Hence the water found an easy way in. Both of them over ported. Now have 2 split heads keeping the back of the garage looking filled.

Hmmmm paper weights?
