Focus TDCI Slow

Hi,
My brother's Focus 1.8 TDCI was recently making a slight screetch under full throttle as it came on boost (not all through the revs, just briefly at around 2k rpm). Still pulled fine though. Wasn't too worried as the car is due a service very soon.
Today though the car has lost power - still drives but VERY slow to rev. No chirp either so I'm guessing it's not boosting right.
What could be causing this? The car was cutting out in traffic one day last week but never did it again since. I presume this is all related.
Just went outside and it starts and idles fine, no excessive or funny coloured smoke.
I would just like to know what the possibilities are for when he puts it to the garage?
