I tried (and failed) to intsall an HP wireless printer for a friend today.

It got to a point where it said "The IP address of the computer 217.xxx.xxx.xxx and the IP address of the printer 192.xxx.xxx.xxx are not compatible. Switch off the router and printer and try again".

What on earth are "incompatible" IP addresses?

The wireless router (BT 2wire) is set up with a fixed IP address (which is essential to a piece of software they use). The DHCP range is 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.99 or similar and the router is "seeing" the printer and assigning it an IP that doesn't clash with the other devices (2xPC).

Help!

IP address of the computer and printer must be on the same subnet. Computer should have a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx as well. Try forcing the computer to re-acquire it's IP and try again (disable wireless adapter and re-enable it)
