Smell of gas - Diff problem?

After a long trip we started to notice the strong smell of natural gas when stoping the car ( 57 FFRR TDV8).A quick internet search reveals this to be a sign of diff failure. Does any one have any experience of this?

Might not be the diff. we had an engine at work and that smelt of gas too once it was stripped.

Do they still use EP90 gear oil in the diffs? - I suppose it does smell a bit like that - Certainly a particular smell to it.
