how do you tell the owner it's way too much money? It ticks the boxes at first glance (4.5 engine, colour, well looked after...) and I would love to book a day (or 2, it's bl**dy miles way as usual) out to look at it.

What would you do, leave it until the owner drastically reduces the price or what?

Here's the car: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1515016.htm

If you cant afford it then find a cheaper one? The seller feels it is worth top dollar then good luck to him I say.

It looks and sounds a good one. Nice colour, good spec, kept in a heated garage, £20k spent on it etc etc. If you buy a 'cheap' Cerb you can easily spend thousands putting it right. make him a reasonable offer. As a Cerbera owner I'm all for owners asking for what they consider the car is worth.

Good points, actually I have been wondering if it's a better bet to spend "top money" from a dealer or get a car for a better price privately, taking into consideration that a reputable dealer (there do seem to be some reputable TVR dealers...) will usually have to give some kind of warranty...

Ring the seller up, tell him you are interested in his/her car, but ask how negotiable he/she is on price. If they are adamant they want that price then you'll know to look elsewhere.

Judge every car you see, view lots, speak to curent and past owners of the model and draw your own conculsions on what car is for you on its own merits.
Look for three things condition, condition & condition. In an advert the only thing you have to go by until you view the car is the list of monies spent and improvements made, these are the only things that give you the warm feeling that condition is being maintained...then view. Be aware every Cerbera looks good in photos.

FWIW, if as described then £18k is not too excessive imho. I bet he has bills that add up to that as well. Feel free to pick up one for 12k with no bills if that's what you consider to be a bargain. Although I 'm not saying you can't pick up a good car for sub £12k, just your chances of doing so are reduced.

Just my 2peneth and I'm not A Cerb owner, but if it's been chipped (re-mapped I presume) and has Joolz's whirlwind induction kit then I would expect the owner to have a dyno print showing the engine power / torque. If it's a red rose and a good one then a good dyno print would be a strong selling point - I would ask the owner why he / she hasn't displayed it in the advert.

It isnt a Red Rose. That bit of the add puts me off. It says Red Rose power. Which it wont have I bet ! I t wont have 440bhp. It might have say 410 which is non remapped Red Rose?

I'm sure its a very good car...but does anyone else think £18k is a bit rich for the age and mileage?

It depends whether we want to see Cerbera values stabalise or even increase slightly. I'd say based on its own merits £18k for that car is a good price. Compared to some other Cerberas I'd say it is a 'strong' price, but I wouldn't say overpriced.

Well looked after Cerberas, with modifications should be hitting £20k, but it seems the unloved examples selling for £8k are dragging down the valuations across the board.

Sounds like a cracker of a car, right in every way.

£18,000 sounds OK to me.

I think we have. I certainly got 410 or more with no remap. So 440 is expected by all involved.

It's true they do seem to be on offer at "low" prices lately. However even specialists like David Gerald (for example) are offering 1998 4.5 models for £15,500 or so which tells me (perhaps incorrectly?) that this is a kind of maximum price.

I am not contemplatinbg looking at the cheapies as I am old enough and ugly enough to know that buying is just the start of the financial adventure but the other 4.5s do seem to be about 12-14k

Obviously if paying 18k (hopefully a bit less as we all expect to haggle to some degree) guarantees a minium of further expenditure then I'd be glad to pay it. However I suspect I could pay 18k for a car and spend just as much on it as on a car I'd just spent 12k for (if that makes sense).

I am particularly going into the possibilities of buying a Cerbera with my eyes wide open as they're not like the Yankee iron I'm used to, i.e. just buy it and forget it apart from oil and petrol!!!

It's a cracking car and well worth a look. I know the car/owner and if IIR it's 1st owner was Ann Summers. There is/was a Dyno print out and the owner is a very knowledgeable mechanic.
Have a look. It's well worth it.

In my very very humble opinion it looks a bit dear, for a few grand more you could buy a newer dealer supplied model, there are several for sale on PH at the moment.

Wasn't there a 450.1 or something just over 450 on here end of last year?

Found it,

450.1 is the highest output 4.5 that Austec have built according to their site here: http://www.austec.co.uk/engine-upgrade.asp?Make=TV...
