I'm thinking of buying a Legacy, but noticed a few outbacks that look the same as the Legacy. Does anyone know what the difference is between these two example cars? I know one is 4X4 and the other is 2WD, but they make a Legacy 4X4. So what's 'other' differences?

They're both AWD, the main difference is the Outback has a bit more ground clearance and slightly softer suspension for more comfort on the rough stuff.

Thanks for that clarification. Are there any other significant differences?

I just looked at your profile, you seem to be the man to ask further... are these cars reliable, and are there any known problems with them. I am looking at buying one that has between 60-100k miles. Am I asking for trouble?

Very reliable in general, not much goes wrong. I've heard rumours of some 3.0 motors using a bit of oil but nothing solid to actually back that up so it might just be one of these 'internet faults'.

As for differences I'm not really up with all the Outback details but IIRC they have self-levelling suspension and a few other things as well. There was a thread in GG not long ago where I think someone mentioned a couple of other differences as well, might be worth searching for (if PH search is working this week).

Yes, I looked on there, but it seems to be more for the 'old school' bi-turbo jap import owners
