Just finished my first week of owning my X5 Was nearly put off by Clarksons reveiw but i'm so glad I went for it. Just back from a run round Stirling Callander and Loch Lomond averaged 20mpg, power is amazing and even with the roads full of potholes the ride was very comfortable. I realise this type of car is not everyones cup of tea but I guess Clarkson just doesnt like BMW'S

Good on you.

I reckon the X5 is one of the best cars BMW makes. The X5M must be quite a formidable tool therefore.

I am sorry but the X5 does not deserve to carry an M badge. How can you possibly describe a 'tractor' 4x4 as having any relationship to a performance sports car / coupe / saloon? BMW have just destroyed two decades of brand building by badging every car in its range with an M badge.

The X5 may well be an engineering masterpiece but will never be an M Car regardless of the exterior badging!

Can I just clarify. I did not buy this car because of the M badge After 5 years of owning a X5 4.6is I was looking for a replacment and I nearly bought a 4.8is then I spotted the X5 M I would have bought it just the same if it had been a X5 Sport or whatever. I actually agree that M cars should have racing pedigree and that if BMW over use the badge that some people may think it's devalued.

As I said it may not be everyones choice but the performance of this 2 ton "tractor" is mind blowing.

Totally agree with Daz. Glad you`re enjoying the new car and 20mpg on a cross country hoon is very good for that car.
Rather that than a Cayenne any day of the week. Still think they should have called it the Mx5 smile

With respect Richard, the //M values were diluted long before the X5M was launched.

I think you've missed the point of this car. Personally, if I had a family and sprogs to taxi around, I cannot think of a more appropriate car for a man who still has petrol running through his veins, but cannot justify a hardcore sports car as well.

why not?

The ///M badge is to specify it was developed by the ///M divison... if they took the X5 and made it better why shouldnt it wear it?

Yeah they are branching out to offer BMW rivals to the likes of the Cayenne Turbo and Merc AMG 4x4's and //M is the top of the range performance brand. I'm actually surprised we've never had a 7 series M car to compete with the various S-Class AMG cars.

It's sad that this means the M brand gets diluted but until they annouce that they will stop M3 and M5 production to focus on X5 and X6 M vehicles i'm not going to get too worried about it.

Surely by BMW offering an ///M car in every model in its range they are appealling to a far wider performance car user that might have gone elsewhere because the "traditional" M3 and M5 vehicle did not suit thier needs.
Whilst the history of the M3 and M5 remains traceable through previuos generations, at the end of the day BMW are a lifestyle brand that are ///Marketing what they do best - high performance well made motors - to an ever increasing following.
Fairplay to the OP, great choice !

While I may not like the X5M I can't criticise it.

After all I don't think there's anything motorsport (with a small M) about my E39 M5 - at least the previous M5s had an engine with some proper motorsport history behind it.

It's nice to see people sticking up for the OP. I thought it was brave to put that post up knowing that the X5M is such a contentious vehicle. There are many different opinions on whether the X5M constitutes a true M car but I guess the ones that really count are from those who actually own and drive one.

I can.

An E60 M5(Touring if you need to carry loads of stuff), that will carry sprogs and their paraphernalia just as well as an X5.

To be fair to Belleair, it's not that many years ago that BMW's M division agreed with him.

I remember the then head of that department stating quite categorically, in an interview with BMW Car magazine, that there would never be an M power version of the X5 as it was not a suitable base vehicle, and didn't fit with the ethos of BMW M Gmbh.

Before I bought the X5 I test drove a Range Rover Vogue TDV8 22MPG on a mixed run from a diesel???? Then I tested an M5 Touring lovely car very nearly bought it but I missed the higher driving position. Suppose its horses for courses it would be a boring place if every one drove the same car.
