Hello all.

I have a mate who bought a phone from a guy he knows in the US. Not sure of the background but basically he's wondering if it can be made to work in the UK?

When i switch it on it's also asking for a pass code - yes i too was scratching my chin.

Anyway, it's here now and we're wondering what if anything can be done to make it work here?

Also, can these things be opened up? Of not how do you put a sim card in?

Yours confused,

D.

If it was on a CDMA network like Sprint or Verizon then there is no way it will work anywhere else.

If it was on a GSM network then it should work OK everywhere if it's unlocked and has a valid SIM installed.

and the top hit when you Google "iphone sim" is : http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9738138-1.html a nice video showing you how to take the SIM out.

So are we saying this is possible then?

How so, by jailbreaking it?

Thanks,

David.

They're identical to uk iPhones. If you can make it take the sim card, it'll work.

David.

Thanks - interesting so far.

I have no idea what versions it's running.

Is there a 'factory reset' button on these? What happens if you forget your passcode?

I'm guessing that he'll have to do a reset/default restore through iTunes. That will knock the iPhone back to how it came from the factory - so no passcode. It will also wipe all his data, apps and settings, so he'll need to put those back.

Thats fine, he wants it wiped anyway.

I'll fire it through iTunes and see what happens.

US phone will be likely locked to AT+T. You'll need to sim unlock the device to make the bugger work with a UK sim.

Don't fire it through iTunes latest version, as 3.1.3 has not been cracked yet, so you'll end up with a paperweight until such time as it is cracked.
Jump on to iClarified's website, and in one of the MANY tutorials, grab 3.1.2. software.
Use iTunes to Restore with the Alt key held down - that'll permit you to find the .ipsw file (wherever you've downloaded it to), and use that.
From there, run Blackra1n (need to download it too!) and that's it jailbroken and unlocked to all UK SP's

I'm not totally up to date on the BL side of things, but if memory serves correctly, some users who've not maintained jailbreak/unlock whilst updating, instead using iTunes to update to 3.1.2, then they have to use Blackra1n every time they reboot or it powers off from insufficient battery life.

iClarified should help, as will GeoHots blog site, where you get Blackra1n from. I'm sure a Google search using the BL number will reveal what's what.

I would advise not to, since 3.1.3 is out now, and even with an older version of iTunes (9.0.1-2) if you've not already downloaded 3.1.2, then you'll only get 3.1.3

Best to grab the 3.1.2 from the link in iClarified's tutorial, which won't have the BL fiddled with, and use the Alt Restore method to install, then run Blackra1n, and you'll be up and running with whatever SP's SIM you've got in it.

OK, so i don't have a cable for the iPhone. Is the one for the iPod the same?

Looking froward to making him a nice paperweight.

Hello all.

I've got this iphone and i can get it into recovery mode and iTunes see's its in recovery mode.

When i go to restore, and i hold the alt key down, it doesn't seem to make a difference, it still wants to update to 3.1.3?

Any ideas folks?

Thanks,

David.

Cancel that, it's a mac thing and it's actually shift on windows.

Anyway, i dont think it matters as apple aren't signing anything other than 3.1.3. So looks like i'll have to go 3.1.3 and wait for it to become available for sim unlock.

Did you download the 3.1.2 .ipsw file?
If you have, then you should be given the pop-up asking you to point iTunes to where the software is located on your computer.
If not, then there's the problem right there.

Apologies for getting the key press wrong - thought it was the same for both OSes.
Hang fire for the moment - 3.1.3 is JB with Pwnage on Mac (do you know a Mac user?)

Which iPhone do you have, exactly?
