I was listening to Radio 4 this morning and there was a short mention about the British Bobsleigh pair crashing out at the Olympics. Which, in itself is unfortunate, but is a non-story. However, one of the guys said:
Y'man said:
"The track's fast, the fastest track in the world but it's a technical track. If you get it wrong at a high speed it can go very wrong.

"This can happen - it's bobsleigh, it's not ballet dancing. We'll just have to come back for the four-man."
Radio 4, however, spun it out as a serious story and had on someone from the British ballet banging on about how male Ballet dancers are "All men" and not poncy. This dragged on for what seemed like forever and I actually found myself yelling at the radio that I was sure that his point was more that you are exposed to danger and death during the bobsleigh whereas you're less likely to be killed in an icy ball of death while performing at the ballet.

Stop wasting time with these useless, pointless non-stories and get on with the business of providing us with proper news and informative journalism you dozy bds!

My thoughts entirely. I believe the basic point was that, in general, ballet dancers aren't faced with a 90mph sprint down a frozen trough with various poles and detritus around them in a metal tub with blades on the bottom.

In it's terms though, he is quite right.

It is bobsleigh, it is not ballet dancing... biggrin

But not as a result of having their faces smashed in at 90mph...

I felt that the whole interview was a bit "tongue in cheek", certainly on John Humphrey's part.

The BBC try to make a big deal out of something, by trying to take it out of context.

When rowing we used to shout things like "It's not a dressage event." (In other words, stop trying to look pretty, and put some feckin' work on the oar.) It doesn't mean we hate the people who train horses to dance prettily though.

Slow news day for the BBC?

My thoughts on this too.

I think the OP has got the wrong end of the stick. An occasional jovial spin on the news is welcome relief

Pfft obviously you have never done the "attitude en pointe". You can die from the pain alone. hehe

You're probably right - it's been a long weekend and I'm very tired....

Can I have an Ambiwlans to take me away now?

Yes, it was slightly funny though, that when the brakeman met up with the driver, driver gave him a big "manhug" RIGHT on the raw skin! Poor Booger!

I thought this was going to be a grammar threadsmile

Some years ago there was a TV show that pitted sports stars from different sports against each other.
Decathalon, soccer, tennis etc... included were a racing driver and a male Ballarina (which I suspect should be a Ballerino).

The Dancer, Brashinkov I think, did extreemly well, as did the racing driver.

Not your posting...the quote of the bobsleigh guy "It's not ballet dancing"
sounds clumsy compared with "It's not the ballet".
Whilst not being one of the pendants myself they are aboutsmile
