Can't get my head around this one. Looked at fly/drive Aberdeen/Seattle for July premium economy.

On Friday it was quoting £2386, today its £2863, thats £477 extra. Thats for 2 people by the way. The discount on the car hire is just over £30.00 Friday it was £350.00

When I checked web site Friday, and Sunday, to fly on the 3rd July, it showed the outward leg as £991, today its £700.

Just spoke to BA, she told me that was absolutely correct, flights do fluctuate, she said. Me thinks BA is taking the piss big time.

Today, its £614 each way, but if book just the outward leg, its jumps up to £2401, thats an extra £1787...............

Good old rip off Britain.

Why is that 'rip off Britain'? It's the way flight pricing works all around the world.

Regardless of the pricing structure, I wouldnt book anything with BA.

I booked Virgin, even though it was a tad more, because I cant stand the thought of all the stress if they strike.

I looked at an AirFrance flight from Paris to Manchester one way for a supplier the other day and it was €500.

Adding a return leg a week later the the whole trip was €60.

Bear in mind that if you keep checking and rechecking a flight the same day then the price will go up as the system sees insreased demand. If no-one books then it usually resets during the night, but not necessarily to the same level.

Have a look on Expedia etc rather than BA direct - sometimes if you make it a package with Expedia (by adding car hire or a hotel) then the price can be way cheaper than flight only.

Trouble is that BA are the only ones to fly direct from the UK to Seattle.

OP - can you change the dates of your break? Remember 4th July is a big holiday in the US and demand is probably affecting your flight price.

How do they justify a seat booked 5 months ahead being £291 extra if I had booked it either Friday or Sunday just gone, and today its £291 less......

I might add that when I booked the same flight 2 years ago, again 5 months ahead, the following day I wanted to change the Aberdeen to Heathrow to a day earlier to have a day in London, they wanted £1800 to do it, not a typo, £1800.

So I said "No problem, I will make my own way to London", to which I was told, as I had booked from Aberdeen, I couldn't get on the Heathrow/Seattle flight, I had to fly from Aberdeen......

Con job.

It's all perfectly standard though.

I flew Man to Toronto direct with Air Canada. It was a £100 cheaper (and this is on a £400 economy flight) to fly Man - Boston, even though the route was via Toronto! I asked if I could book to Boston but leave in Toronto and they said nothing to stop me doing that, but I couldn't pick up the return in Toronto as it would be automatically cancelled if I didn't board in Boston.

Because their computer systems have very complicated software algorithm judging how many seats remain in a particular class, how close to departure etc. I expect that over the weekend someone booked a coach party-worth of passengers on those dates.

£4K is a lot, obviously, but if you think about it, £300 is ridiculous. And most of that will be taxes, security fees etc, the airline probably gets less than half.

Perhaps if the fare was a consistant £1K then there wouldn't be the same fluctuation. But then fewer people would fly off peak and the planes would be empty. What would you do if you ran an airline?

Now just remind me who is on strike at the moment?

BA... nope.

Lufthansa... oooh yes, 4 days started today. Pilot strike, also includes Germanwings and freight services.
And I believe they had one in Jan 2009 Flight attendants
and in July Ground staff and catering staff
and... ?

... oh can't be arsed.

Oh sorry, mea culpa, I forgot; Pistonheads.com Slagging off BA matters.

Flipping heck-all I was saying was that if I were choosing an airline to book flights with, it would not be one that is KNOWN to have a strike looming.

There are plenty of other reasons not to fly BA, but those are just my personal reasons.

Let me put it this way. If there were 2 comparible flights, from and to the same detination, from the same departure airport, why on earth would anyone choose to book BA at this present time?

Fair enough, and I can understand your viewpoint and don't disagree, but let me put it another way.

All the current slagging off re Toyota recalls generally completely fail to mention that recalls are a way of life for all manufacturers of cars, bikes, trucks and buses.

Understand where I'm coming from?

BA009 is overbooked something rotten all the time, I'd take a good book.
