Want to pick up my MK2 GT3 from the OPC, but need a tracker, do I just get them to fit it or do you lot have any to recommend? Tracker Horizon or RAC Trackstar Plus? Or something else?

Cheers!

You can go mental with tracking systems. The main thing to remember is that is some scrote wants your car he will have it - it just depends how seriously he wants it and to what lengths he will go to. Most performance cars like GT3s are stolen 'with keys' so any traditional tracking systems will only be reasonably effective. Also, the thieves know where tracking devices are typically hidden and can remove them in an hour or so. Most are too lazy and leave the car parked up for a few days and see if it is recovered. If it is they just nick another.

My recommendation is:

Tracker, the basic one is probably fine, this only costs 400 quid
Clifford Blackjax anti-hijack immobiliser - 200 quid (this is hidden and even if they steal with keys this should confuse them)

Note that both the above are hidden security measures, they do not advertise the fact.

If you wanted to increase the security even further I would then get a GPS tracking device fitted as well, say RAC Trackstar. If a thief goes to the trouble of removing one tracking device, he may not think that there is another one still in there.

Get the OPC to fit it. That way if the tracker system install causes problems it's all covered by your Porsche warranty.

No experience of other makes, but the basic Tracker Retrieve relies on you noticing the car has gone missing and informing the control center so that they can activate the tracking signal and get Plod on the case.

Tracker Monitor should activate automatically if the car is moved with the ignition switched off.

Tracker Horizon is as per Monitor, but with a GPS unit so that the car can advertise its whereabouts.

The idea with the Monitor and Horizon systems is that in theory you should know that the car has been stolen straight away and hopefully there's time for the BiB to go fetch it before the scroats have time to disable the device.

You pays your money and makes yer choice...

Great thread here.

The instant notification thing is good, but my g/f's car got stolen with a basic tracker and they simply recovered it the next day. The thieves couldn't be arsed to find the unit and remove it (they didn't even know it had one in). Instant notification stops theives getting too far, but not sure how much better it is in reality. Spending the difference towards Clifford Blackjax makes more security sense if the budget is tight.

Check with your insurance as to their requirements, since I had to have the Tracker Horizon (or equivalent in other brands) to be fully covered.
