Thinking of a 15inch Macbookpro
Anyone tried the refurbished stuff from Apple?

~ 15 - 20 % off normal prices, but any drawbacks or horror stories?

I know of people who got spec increases for free. Some chap in the states found a full copy of final cut pro on a Mac Pro refurb he ordered.

I bought a Macbook Black ages ago, still working fine. Well recommended and saved me a few quid.

All our Macs are refurbs, never had any problems, nor know of anyone who had. Cheapest deal around, same 12 month warranty.

Cheers,
The stock varies , so I'll browse around ( Im in Hong Kong) , but there seem to be no scare stories.

Now, the extended warranty - is it worth the extra ~ 200 pounds for another 2 years ( on top of the 12 months free) fr the 15 inch MBP's ?

Stock changes daily, work out what you want then keep popping in till its available.

Extra 2 yrs warranty I think always a good idea on a laptop.

IIRC, refurb store store is restocked every Wednesday morning and then it's first come first served

i got mine from Jigsaw24 as an ex-demo, has a scratch underneath, but who looks at the bottom of a lappy, when there's £100 off !
but on fleabay, this seems a good buy : MacBook Pro 13" @ £675

you don't need to buy the extended warranty immediately, as long as it's bought before the first year manufacturer warranty runs out
also, don't get it from Apple, i got mine from fleabay. and it's pukka - all verified on the Apple website warranty @ £99

Just bought a refurbished Mac Mini Server.

New ones were listed as shipping in 24 hours, refurbished units after 8 days or so. I placed the order on Wednesday last week, and it arrived Friday morning. It has a scratch on the outer casing, which since it's going on a shelf I don't care about. Saved £127.

Very happy.

Another happy Apple refurbished customer here. Bought an iMac a few years ago - saved a fair bit of dosh and ended up with a larger hard drive. Never had any problems.

Extended warranty is worth it as you get the telephone support for the whole period.

I got one of the new 21.5" iMacs just after Christmas. I paid £819 for it instead of about £969 and is was absolutely perfect. It even had the shrink wrap still on it and no marks at all. The only thing different was it came in a plain cardboard box. I'd definitely buy again from there.

My 13" MacBook Pro is a refurb. 2.53GHz, 4GB, 250GB HDD. Got it for £960. It's perfect, you really wouldn't know it had been a refurb.

Not at all. I did it for my iPhone 3G, £30 for an extra years cover, less than half what Apple charges. I've claimed several times on it (the fking stupid thing keeps breaking) with no problems.

All my Apple kit has come from the refurb store (PowerMac, 2x Mac Pro), the only difference as far as I can tell is that sometimes you get a different box.

As others have said check daily.

Also the MacBooks are being updated next month so possibly some good stuff will appear on there.

I got my 21in iMac from the refurb store a couple of years back. It came with a higher spec than quoted (twice the memory and larger HDD) which would have been another £130 on top.
I've had no issues at all and would happily buy a refurb again.
The only difference is it comes in a plain box rather than a retail box, same warranty as a brand new unit.
The store does now quote more specific specs than when I bought mine so you may not be so lucky with an unexpected upgrade.

Just be aware that pretty much the whole range of macs are due an update or refresh within the next couple of months so prices for previous gen refurbs will drop.

Actually.... I think I may have been conned

Just saw this - http://discuss.50plus.com/ipb/index.php?showtopic=...

applecare ebay scam said:
I was looking around a few weeks ago for a good price on Applecare.
I always buy it for Mac laptops but not for Mac desktops. Laptops get more of a beating being carried around all the time and I think components are under more stress because everything is packed in so tightly.

Anyway - I found a huge discrepancy in pricing between what Apple charges - straight list, what some retailer charge, may $50 or $100 off list (depending on the specific Applecare) and what many people on ebay sell it for - less than half price and well under Apple's wholesale price to the dealers.

Rather than jump on the lowest price immediately, I decided I better try to find out what is going on.

After reading numerous threads all over the net, it turns out there is a pretty neat fraud going on where one doesn't know one has been defrauded until days or weeks or years later and maybe never.

Let me explain -
When one buys Applecare one basically gets a 15 digit registration code. You then go to an Apple webpage, put in the serial number of the computer and that Applecare registration code and if everything matches - right registration code, right serial number and registration done before the one year warranty runs out, you get registered automatically and get an email back to that effect.
So most people on ebay who sell Applecare dirt cheap, well not that cheap it turns out, willnot send you the complete retail package with the registration code inside but make a statement like "shipping is free - no shipping necessary, I'll just send you the registration code by email"
And they do - you use it with your computer serial number, Apple sends you the registration email and you think everything is fine.
Later something breaks on your laptop, you go to the Apple store, they look up your computer serial number, they see you have Applecare, the problem gets fixed for free and usually very quickly. Applecare sells for $400.- for a MacBook Pro, so you are a well paying customer. Little do they know that you bought Applecare - well the code - on Ebay for less than $150.-

Life's good, everything is great until you get an email from Apple which asks you for the serial number on the outside of the box or a sales receipt for the Applecare.
Of course you have neither - all you have is the Applecare registration code.
No serial nimber or sales receipt - Applecare gets cancelled and you're left high and dry.
Not only are you out your $150 for the eBay purchase (the ebay and paypal complaint timeframes have now long passed), but even worse, you can no longer buy Applecare because it has to be bought within the original warranty period and that has passed as well. So now there is a double whammy.

What happened????????????????
Well it seems someone in China has managed to create an algorithm (or steal it from Apple) where he can generate valid Applecare codes.
These are sold in China for $25.- to a number of middle men who then peddle them to US resellers in bulk who then sell them on eBay for about $150.- each for the MacBook Pro ones.
When you register that "fake" Applecare code with Apple everything seems fine (it's not really fake as such since it's a valid code just obtained through illegitimate means) until someone goes and buys the "real" Applecare in a retail box and it happens to have the same registration code as the one you have already registered.
That may happen a week, a month a year or even past the two-year Applecare warranty period, but when it does, a red flag goes up at Apple that someone tries to use a registration code that has been used already. If you register on line, your registration will go to "pending (or some such words) while Apple tries to figure out who bought the valid code.
They do that by asking for the Applecare serial number which is on the outside of the box that the registration code came in.
No box, no serial number no Applecare.........and a bunch of really mad Mac users.
"If it's too good to be true it usually is" certainly applies here.

Now that doesn't mean you can't buy Applecare on eBay - I just did. Just make sure you get the whole product with the box sealed, not just the activation code.

Okay, thanks for the replies.

Had my 15" MBP for a year and a half now. Ordered a 2GB 2.5Ghz Dual Core for £1200(ish) and they sent me a 4GB 2.6Ghz by mistake (or from reading one of the the above posts, maybe out of kindness!!)

Never had a problem and arrived as good as new. Just didn't arrive in the fancy packaging.

Go for it.

Are you buying in HK? I was checking out the prices for Macs in HK and they are considerably cheaper than UK prices. Taking £1 GBP is 12 HKD.

Base 13" MBP is 9288 HKD (£744 GBP) UK Price is £918.00.

Plus saving a further chunk for refurb!

Problem is I want a 27" iMac and they don't come up very often. Also refurb is online only, so difficult for a visitor to buy? I'll be there for a day only in March.
