Do you think the Tories actually want to win the election?

I've been reading the odd opinion here and there, papers, news, PH and I really can't find any evidence for the Tories wanting to win the election.

We've seen how Labour have poisoned the wells and how the Tories continually fail to shoot at open goals.

Why?

Could it be the case that they just don't want it?

If Labour do win, and the most likely scenario for this is that they win control of a hung parliament by giving concessions to the Lib Dems, then they will have very little power - but it will become utterly obvious to most that they have dragged the country in to the gutter.

This will consign Labour to longer in opposition then Maggie managed...

I have had a few suspicions about this. IMHO, we are very close to calling in the IMF. That would lead to years of recession. It may be that the Conservatives feel that Labour should be forced to drink from the well that they have poisoned.

Everybody blames the banks for the credit crunch. Things were a little more complicated than that. In the States, legistlation was passed which forced the granting of mortgages to poor people. Over here, the politicians achieved the same result, but in a more subtle fashion. Developers could not get planning permission unless the developments contained a certain percentage of "affordable housing". Prescott set targets for for "housing density". Here in Surrey the target is 27 residences per acre. This policy resulted in huge numbers of cheap dwellings being built. So, Labour created the sub-prime market here in the UK.

Spain and Ireland, for different political reasons also built houses that there was never a real market for.

The only way out is for public and private debt to be reduced. This means recession. We can either have a sharp three year recession, or we can try to bury our heads in the sand, and have 20 years of slow growth.

The politicians in the three main parties are all backing the 20 years option. I think that the markets will force them to act differently, and the Conservatives do not want to be in charge when that happens.

I think the Tories are just wary after Brown's honeymoon election that never happened, and now they don't want to play their cards until a date is set.

As someone living safely 10,000 miles away, far out of Labour's reach, I'm all for a Labour win. They shat in the bed, they should be made to sleep in it. Of course in reality, the country would be totally screwed and beyond any IMF rescue package, as a proud Englishman I can't have that happening to my homeland!

Well said - i'm amazed in all this how Clinton and his comrades have avoided any blame after they decided and legislated that it was everyones 'right' to own a property, irrespective of earnings etc... thats when the seed was sown...

I'm predicting a ridiculously low turnout with an ill defined outcome.

Something needs to happen to the structure of the system here.

It's a case of whether you want to gargle with st or spunk and most people are doing their best to ignore participating in the rotten process.

If we get Brown in again, we need to get a sniper fund together. A good bit of advertising could get a few hits and we could thin a few of them out.

Awwwwww, won't it be great, Call Me Dave is about to unveil the Nuclear Bomb of policies and everyone will be totally awestruck. Labour will just walk out of parliment never to be seen again and disband. The Libdems and UKIP will join them in a chorus of the national anthem.

I will believe it when I see it. They are going to need to do a lot better than this. It begs the questions....

1. If they are not going full bore now, why not?
2. Do they want to go full bore?

There are enough idiots left to get swung around. There is plenty of time for some careful sleaze allegations/spanners in the works. They should hit it now and then fight a bloody good fight and just keep kicking them again and again.

It's an open goal but part of the responsibility must lie with the Tories for being such a feeble opposition and allowing the media to run circles round them. Barely a single prominent tory exudes any anger over how Labour have quite predictably raped this country. It might be a poisoned chalice but it is time to show just what a train-wreck this country has become and set out to fix it.

It's just about to happen.

Gordon is about to gasp when the election will be. He is also about to announce his manifesto which will simply be "we are the party of all and they are the party of the few" repeated ad infinitum.

Then, oh yes, then Call Me Dave will at last show us what he is made of. Labour will be destroyed under a tsunami of policies and leaked Labour scandals. The result will be decisive. Even the BBC will have to capitulate and offer their future paymasters some grudging support.

I hate to say this (being a staunch Tory) but I think you're right Soovy. Haven't Labour brought in some new legislation that says the budget deficit must be halved by 2014? If so then, knowing Brown's tax & spend mentality, they will breach their own legislation.

The Torys are wet and hopeless, that much is sure. Everyone can see it. That's why there's no enthusiasm.

I doubt CMD wants Labia back in, even with their poisoned chalices, but actually I wouldn't mind. There's nothing like seeing somebody choke on their own vomit.
