One of the ladies I work with does this and it really annoys me.

The phone is ringing.....

'ring ring'....'ring ring'....etc.

If Im closest to the phone, I pick up the handset when i get to it. For some reason she waits for a break in the 'ring ring' before picking it up even if she is sat right next to it!

If she is caught off guard and misses the first set of rings she will wait until the next set has finished before answering. Sometmes the incompetant fool misses the second set and waits for the THIRD before picking it up.

Does anyone else do/encounter this?

Well, I'm nominating this, RIGHT NOW, for thread of the year.

It really does have everything.

I wait for the ringing to stop, then check the voicemail later. That's when the phone is working, of course.

You should always do this anyway. Answering earlier looks desperate.

How would she react if she knew that in the silent bits at her end, the caller is hearing the ring tone - the sound alternates end to end.

There is a thread somewhere about having to set your heating or car audio to an even number. Not something I do (often) but could be seen by some as an annoyance.

A form of OCD perhaps?

That's clearly insane.

Surely everyone knows that you have to get up, flick the lights on and off three times, get back to your chair and touch the phone with your forehead twice before answering....

That's just plain odd. You do get that?

Lights only ever go off and on an even number of times.

You tri-flick types need help.

Stage two is shuffling around with boxes of tissues on your feet and collecting your piss in jam jars.

No, no, you misunderstand - it's an on-off sequence, three times. Sheesh!

Of, hanging up is another matter - the other person has to hang up and then you have to tap the handset on the desk twice while whispering "Candyman" three times. It goes without saying that you mustn't look in the mirror while saying "Candyman"

My work DECT phone plays a bar of either La Marseilliese or Deutschland Uber Alles (SP x 2?) depending if it's an internal or external call.

I will frequently let it finish a bar before answering.

I hasten to add that there is usually no-one else in earshot of my desk to be driven nuts by this.

that is because the caller is hearing the ringing generator in the exchange not the phone the other end .
