Walk the Freedom Trail, a red painted line on the pavement that takes you round all the historical sites. The guided tour of State House is worth it as is a guided tour of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts. Go to the top of the Prudential Tower for superb views, walk down Newbury Street for the high class shops, walk around Beacon Hill and marvel at old money, visit the burial grounds near Boston Common which have some of the oldest headstones in the USA.
Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall is where ALL the tourists hang out and the restaurants are priced accordingly (but still relatively cheap compared to UK). In Quincy Market there are about 70+ fast food vendors, all selling something different very cheaply. There is also a replica of the Cheers bar there selling overpriced but tasty pints. The 'real' Cheers bar is at the edge of Beacon Hill and is also worth dropping into for a pint.
If you've got kids the New England Aquarium will kill a day easy and the Science Museum is excellent.
The centre of Boston is very small and is easily walkable. The trolley bus tours are a fun way to get your bearings and you can hop-on/off at will.
Bunker Hill over the river is much much quieter and worth a wonder round, I was disappointed with USS Constitution though. I was also very disappointed with Harvard - walking around the campus was intersting but there is sod all else there.
I love Boston - it has a very European feel with the all the positives of US culture.

If you're there for the 4th of July, that would be a giggle.
A few years ago they had a free concert by the river and half an hour of amazing fireworks.
A boat ride to Provincetown would be a fun too...
They have the concert and the fireworks every year I think. I was there last year for the 4th and it was great. Nice city to walk around unlike many in the US. A few years ago they had a free concert by the river and half an hour of amazing fireworks.
