Basic background:

I was given 3 days notice on my contract (thanks very much), and finish work this Friday (At 11.15 precisely judging by the calendar entry from HR where I will be 'stripped' of my company assets...)

So, as the title says - What can I do?

I love my cars, I love my whisky, I play the drums (very occasionally now), still have the school runs etc to worry about - so jetting off for a coke and hooker fuelled fortnight might not get approval from the Mrs wink

Im 37, fed up of doing the office worker thing, would love to be my own boss (and have previously run a small 'man with a van' type business), dont have the necessary skills to go it alone in a car based business although this would be my favourite - sports and classic cars selling and tinkering would be my idea of heaven.

So ideas please:

Courses, Online stuff, Business ideas, people I should speak to, general banter all welcome.

PS. Anyone wanting a beer at 11.16 this Friday in Waterloo (Belgium) let me know wink

Man with van... how about Prestige valeting?

You get to tinker with cool cars (sort of), and it might not be so dog eat dog.

You raise an excellent point.

I wondered what the deal was with getting trained as a 'chips away' or 'dent devil' type guy - what with the quality of the roads and drivers over here you could make a mint Im sure (thats assuming any of them are bothered about having dents and scratches all over their company audi/bmw/merc)...?

Any business idea that will be mentioned on this thread or you will find on the internet will have been flogged to death and be a waste of your time as a viable income. If you are expecting someone to hand over a magic idea you will be waiting a long time.

Also, with regards to retraining, that won't happen overnight and will involve financial outlay.

Sorry if I come across rude, but you seem to be expecting an instant resolve to the situation you find yourself in. It doesn't exist.

Not rude at all - and no I dont expect a quick fix, although Im very open to ideas for re-training / getting a trade etc.

Its not a huge problem if there is some outlay involved - and may not be a problem if its over a reasonable period of time - I really feel like its time to try and do something I want to rather than just taking whats paying at the time.

I see what you're saying though thumbup

If only there was a quick fix eh!

Don't worry, I've had the same think that you have had already this year and am putting some wheels in motion myself for a new direction.

Not if it was the Badger woman. That'd make the OP feel much much worse.

Plus she'd eat him after the mating.

And he's married.

Whatver you decide to do it will be pretty crappy to start, especially in the current climes, but with hard work, tears, and frustration you'll be at exactly the same position three years later! Don't do it!

Just kidding. Good luck.

Really? After all those promises and hundreds of thousands of pounds of the banks money spent on TV advertising?

Sorry but Bazking is right. Ever remember your father saying 'get yourself a trade son and you will always be in work'? I suspect, as it happens, that this is mostly a big fat lie in this day and age, what with double dip recessions and quantitative easing, but it does have some foundation in fact. Why not train to be a mechanic. Cars and a very desirable skill. Forget Toyboata's (although that could be pretty lucrative just now biggrin) but a good mechanic will always be busy.

No, I know I paint a pretty bleak picture of my own stupidity, but Im not THAT daft wink

No offence to all those married folk out there - but if I want an exciting day with the extended family and a lot of expenditure I'll hire a bus for them to watch me buy another Porsche wink
