Hi

I'm after a bit of advise with regards to upgrading my very old canon 75-300mm zoom lens, which is getting a bit old now.

I use it with a canon 20d and only really for the odd bit of motorsport photography as something else to keep me busy at race meets.

I was looking at replacing it for something like this http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/used-equipment/us...

I believe that the lens I have is the mk1 so is there any point in upgrading to the mk3 or is there a better lens either new or used for similar money?

I run a Sigma 70-300 APO for to fill that requirement. A bit soft, a bit slow and certainly there are better lenses out there, but at less than 200 quid new it's good value...

..works for me.

I wouldnt consider any of canons 75-300's non of them are fantastic.

Look at canons new 55-250IS , much better and decent price, its that or the 70-300IS if you want canon (and cant afford L).

Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm not at all fused about using Canons own lenses just after something to work with my 20D so sigma is the other lenses I've looked at, by the sounds of it at the budget end they're going to be better than canons offerings.

Whats anyone's views on the Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 DG MACRO, I've found a used on for £130. Do you pay a premium for having such a wide range, I don't need 28-300 a 70-300 is adequate if I'm likely to get a better product for my money.

Sorry if these are silly questions I'm a bit new to DSLR's

Well I bought a 2nd hand Sigma 70-300 APO for £100 of ebay,

fingers crossed it improves my somewhat inconsistent results!

I'd recommend Canon 100-300mm. It has a ring USM (faster & quieter focusing); full-time manual focus (which is a must for me for any lens); non-rotating front element; It doesn't extend with focusing; better built.

The Canon 55-250 IS lens can be had for £154.00 with free delivery from Simply Electronics. I'm very pleased with mine.

I'm pretty sure mine was in a UK spec box with guarantee though? I'll check tonight.

Simply Electronics have a warehouse on the Isle of Wight iirc.

I certainly didn't want to pay £100-£150 more for it through one of the high street retailers (Argos had it on sale last year for £349.99, which was £50.00 over RRP!!!)

They do have some kind of office in the IOW, however they are a Hong Kong company. I bought my 55-250 from them as it was nice and cheap. Delivery times are interesting though..........

I thought Canon lenses were worldwide warranty anyway, it's only the bodies that are area specific isn't it?
