Z4 airbag control unit / Being fobbed off by main dealer?
Discussion
I had ~9,000 trouble-free miles with my 03 Z4 3.0i from July (purchase) up until recently. I took my car for its Inspection II to a BMW main dealer last week (£362) and then drove home. The very next time I started the car the airbag light came on. I've been in today and apparently it "can't be reset" and the whole control unit for the airbag (whatever sits underneath the centre console) apparently needs replacing. To say I'm a bit unhappy at my car only developing an error after it visited a main dealer is an understatement.
They want £550 odd to replace the unit, including labour. I have a comprehensive warranty (with a £250 excess!) that covers the problem. However, I am obviously loathed to have to pay that for something that wasn't present last week before it visited the dealer.
The service guy assured me that there was "no way" that they could have done anything to harm it whilst working on it, though that feels a little empty. It seems a remarkable coincidence that I've never had a problem with it for months and months and then straight after its dealer visit it requires some relatively expensive work.
Am I being taken for a ride?
