Is there anyone out there can tell me if I can remove the engine from a 2001 x-type 2.5 V6 petrol (manual gearbox) from the top, or do I have to drop it out of the bottom on its subframe like the workshop manual says?

Out the bottom, sooooooooo much easier. "IF" you can separate the engine and gearbox Might be posible to get the engine out the top.

We used to do gearbox's with the engine in (origional method was to drop everything to do that) But the subframe and transferbox has to come off first, then the gearbox. But there are two really hard to get on bolts at the back of the transfer box and its so much easier to do with it all out. Also one of the output shafts cant be completely withdrawn from the transfer box without messing up an internal seal, so be very carfull and follow the manuals instructions.

I have just given up trying to remove the engine from the top (can`t separate engine and box) - so I`m going to have to drop the lot on the subframe. I have removed most things, so hopefully should be relatively simple!!

Another question for Tame Technician please. I have got the engine/box out on the subframe, but still cannot separate the engine from the box - it comes apart about an inch but no further. Do I need to remove the transfer box first, or is the clutch just stuck on the splines? Any ideas?

Yes Transfer box must come off before actually gearbox.

You probably need the assembly off the subframe too, to remove the TFbox.

Its been a long time since I've done one, but we used to do loads when they were new. There is a big heat shield arround the back of the engine, under the rear banks CAT. That heat sheild needs to come off to expose all of the transfer box bolts.

The output shaft from the TFbox to the O/S/F wheel is the one that you need to pop out but not remove more than 2 inch's or so. THis is really important, other wise the gearbox oil will leak into the transfer box when its up and running.

Engine has now been removed and replacement fitted. The engine can be pulled from the gearbox by sliding out the tranfer box about 2 inches (they could have engineered that a bit better). I would say that removal of the engine from the top is not possible - the only way is drop it out of the bottom with the box on the subframe - staightforward enough and I should have done this to begin with and save myself about 8 wasted hours!!

Some times I miss work on Jags...... But not when I think about taking engines and gearbox's out of X-types. Book time is something like 16 hours.
