V8S : a couple of questions.
Discussion
Took the Tiv to work today. Weather was a bit grim so left the top up (wimp, I know) so it may be that I was a little more aware of noises, but a couple of thinks got me wondering.
Firstly, when sat in traffic idling I was conscious of a 'whirring' from the centre console/gear lever area. Cannot say that I've heard this before in this situation. I pressume its just the rotation of the gearbox inards whilst in neautral, but could it indicate anything more sinister?
Think I'll check gearbox oil level this weekend, incase it is low. Could be worth having it serviced also soon. Was done by previous owner in September, but not since then.
Secondly, a couple of times on my journey home I detected a strange smell enter the cabin
. It happened whilst accelerating quite gently through the gears at 50-60 mph after exiting a 30 limit. Not easy to describe, it was almost like hot rubber. It didn't resemble a pungent odour of burning electrics, but nevertheless had me a little worried. Difficult I know, but any ideas, suggestions?

I can't help with the noise (or smell) I'm afraid. Unless the car has done a lot of miles since September (over 6000?) I wouldn't think it needs servicing again yet. See you on Sunday.

Could be your thrust bearing on your clutch assembly

Have you checked the engine mounts? I have heard of this before, if one of the engine mounts have come away/fallen off, when accelerating the engine moves and touchs the engine tunnel and therefore starts melting the fibre glass.
Fingers crossed you find the problem.

I get the same quite often- easy to sort though - a change of pants and driving slower seems to do the trick
seriously though - I've had the wheel arch and tyre getting friendly before - so this may be a good place to start - wouldn't have though it would be that noticable in slow traffic though

Sounds like the thrusty one to me too. Does it make more noise when you have your foot on the clutch, or off.
If the noise gets louder when you pull off you may have next doors cat stuck round your propshaft
