I've Got an E46 M3
Is anyone else having as much "fun" as me with Pilot Sport 2 tyres in the snow/ice??

They really, really aren't for cold weather, I've had to be towed home twice!!

I thought I was doing OK today on the A90 until I saw a really nice E36 M3 in the barrier, nobody hurt I think but the car looked toast. That slowed me down a bit.
The guy must be gutted, it looked a nice one.

After years of struggling through winters on PS2's, I finally gave in and bought a set of Vredestein Wintrac Ultracs in 265/30/19 and 235/35/19. What a difference, snow is no longer an issue and they perform really well in cold temperatures and in wet conditions. I should have done it a long time ago and even at £650 for the set, if they last me 2 or 3 winters then they'll be worth the money.

Cheers dgm,
I'll have a look at those, no excuse really as I've got a spare set of M3 alloys. It's either that or park the M3 up bext winter and buy an old low power Audi quattro for the winter...
But touch wood, the winter should come to an end shortly

I encountered some snow around Linconshire on Tuesday evening and I must say that they were st fun on some roundabout exits. I'm taking the plunge and buying the winter wheel set from BMw later on this year as I will not have my winter run around next time the snow comes.

I bet the BMW on winter tyres will be better in snow than the Audi without them. If you have the wheels, you should go for the winter tyres.

Yup, have to agree the M3 on PS2s is pretty rubbish in the snow even with some weight in the boot. I'm in the process of looking to replace my car at the moment and I have been leaning towards Audi purelyy due to the quattro option.

However I've never got on with Audi in the past and find the dealers hard work. I'm looking at all the options to stick with BMW and that now includes a spare set of wheels with winter tyres.

GOM, I have seen countless quattro Audis going nowhere in this year's snow, while I trundled along happily on winter tyres.

Top stuff, cheers Zod.... the case to stick with BMW is looking good. All I need to do now is justify why I need an M5/M6 instead of a A8 diesel mile muncher.

Trundling around on Cup plus hasen't been that much fun. Almost anything with four wheels has better traction IMHO

I did it one winter when I had a CSL, but it was probably the warmest winter ever unlike this one (only the Met Office thinks this one has been warm).

I remember your CSL from what is(was) Mtorque forum. I also ran one in 2004/5 and re-call great track day's at Castle Combe organized by a guy from Oxford with a modified CSL. Having just checked the original invoices, cups on my car were replaced after 3,000mls and then again at ,7000mls. after that I gave up and ran PS2's

PS2's = sh*t tyres as soon as its even slightly frosty, forget snow. my staff laughed away wen their little corsa's made it into work in january whilst i had to cancel my day!

as for audi auattro on normal tyres vs. BMW on winter tyres, I find the main difference is when its slightly wet/frosty that the audi has the biggest advantage. A friend lined his A5 3.0 TDI quattro against my E46 SMG at the lights the other day..slightly wet but very cold, and he absolutely dusted me..time to go 4WD methinks..

What tyres do you have on your car?

Given the number of quattro Audis that sell here in the UK, I'm surprised BMW haven't manufactured the xDrive 3- and 5-series for this market.

The BMW will not get off the line at all well unless the conditions are bone dry (for the E92 on PS2s). HAving said that, even in exceedingly wet conditions, I have found the PS2s to be a revelation. There is just so much grip on offer if you are not silly with the accelerater.

Having said that, an RS4 did througherly beat me when accelrating off a wet roundabout onto a duel carraigeway when the conditions were very wet. Both of us were on summer tyres.

A BMW with good winter tyres is perfectly usable through a heavy winter. I spent the best part of 15 months in Switzerland during the best/worst winter for over 50 years and I saw many M3s just getting on absolutely fine. Remember, it's all about driving according to the conditions.

In that case, unless you fancy an Audi for other reasons, you should keep the M3 and run winter tyres from October to March.

Not been on for a while but the PS2s were worth buying(apart from the week spinning going nowhere)!!!
I got them put on in the middle of winter and am only now.appreciating how good they are, as the weather has warmed up a bit. Can't wait till summer!

I attempted to get my E46 m3 (on ps2's) out of my car park, gave up when i ended up further back than when i started. It lay there for more than 3 weeks. Ended up borrowing a friends Frontera.....What a machine!!
