A very good friend of mine has just given his kidney to his partner to save her life (perfect match) and as part of that op he has had to take 12weeks off work (paid by the government), 6 weeks into his 12 his boss has contacted him and laid him off saying there is no work (electricial) !! Surely this is a case for unfair dismissal or at worst a story selling article to help him out ? His partner can't work at the month due to her illness so he is the sole bread winner !

Too many variables to pass any valid thoughts.

On the face of it, sounds like the boss is a git. But maybe there is no work. What was the relationship like before he took leave? Was the boss fully aware of the length of time he'd be off? Is it a big company or small?

Can your friend find out if anyone else is also being taken on (the same work as his job) by his now ex-employer? i.e. has he seen any jobs advertised etc?

I would have tried to agree some holidays and or unpaid leave with the boss first. That said, two people are alive who could easily be dead so I would remind them to enjoy being alive. Fair enough try the CAB and employment tribunal but don't stress and keep looking for another job or can he be a sole trader?

Was does 'lay off' mean exactly? Has he been made redundant? If so, is he the only person?
