Replacing my 40D - What would you do?

I use a Canon 5D and a 40D body. I'm perfectly happy with the 5D, but am upgrading the 40D, primarily for the equine event photography that we do a lot of. The 40D is going to my daughter who works with me.
I was intending getting a 7D, but then realised that there are some good deals to be had on secondhand 1D Mark IIIs. I've read masses about the comparative benefits of each, but am still undecided. Anyone else pondered this? Anyone actually compared the two side-by-side? I need help!

I'd say it depends on your lens collection.
If you've built your set-up around the 40D and its 1.6x crop,will dropping the 1D's 1.3x leave you "short" ?
If it's AF performance that concerns you, a correctly set up 7D is on a par with a 1DMKIIN in my experience... i've been running both cameras side by side for almost 5 months now.

1DIII wil have a deeper buffer, 30+ shots in raw, and 2 card slots, better weathersealing and body with potrait grip.
7D shoots around 20-24 raws (depending on card) before choking.
AF seems close, with the 1DIII locking quicker, the 7D tracking better most times. 7D has more af options, 1DIII has more af points.
1DIII can AF up to f8, so you can use TC's with slower lenses and get away with it. 7D stops at f5.6
7D has more pixels but IMO wont produce any better output at higher ISO due to the 1.3 size sensor, detail gets bined for noise. ISO 800 and lower the 7D should have more detail.
Its close, depends where you want the advantages.

Thanks for the observations and links. My main "workhorse" is the 70-200mm F2.8 L IS. I do have a 1.4 TC to address the "crop" issues (but see below).
I had some problems for example, shooting at an indoor polo event last weekend. I had the 40D on shutter priority at 1/400 second (you really can't afford to go much slower for this sort of action), often needing ISO 1600 and the aperture was still at F2.8 (or lower), for many parts of the arena. Outcome; some shots underexposed. Recovering underexposed shots at ISO 1600, naturally means quite a bit of additional "noise".
I realised I could have "pushed" the 40D to 3200 with ISO expansion, but haven't used that before and didn't want to risk it at such an important event! Max ISO (I think this is with ISO expansion enabled) on the contenders is:
1D Mark III - 6400
50D - 12,800
7D - 12,800
Now, with ISO at 102,400, the 1D Mark IV would definitely "hit the spot". Unfortunately, this is WAY beyond my means ...

I think the 1D is better for noise than the 7D even though it doesn't go as high. See the samples on this page:

I am very tempted with the 1D Mk III and can't imagine many circumstances where I would need to use an ISO of over 6400. Canon Outlet sold one on eBay recently for £1,500; I'm sorry I missed that one ...
Well, I went to "Focus on Imaging" on the last day and Jacobs had a "B-Stock" 1DIII for £1295. Problem; its Serial No. was in the range that included the ones with the known sub-mirror assembly problem. Anyway, I risked it and parted with the readies. I knew that Canon offered and free check and repair if there was a problem. Got is back from Canon today with a clean bill of health!
Haven't had the chance to give it a good test yet; just hoping I've made the right decision. I'll keep you posted ...
