This January the warmest on record
Discussion
Oh how I laughed when I heard on the radio that some climate change bods have written an article(?) in a paper, claiming that this January was the warmest on record!!
What the hell? Where do they get their figures from, or who makes them up?
Sorry but I can't find a link to the newspaper, it was just mentioned on the news section of the radio. Even the presenter laughed!
Did I hear this right?

I have no doubt you heard correctly.
I too think this January was the warmest on record. To obtain this I simply took each temperature which was below 0c and multiplied it by -2. Any temperature reading above 0c was simply doubled. I then took an average of those temps and hey presto, it's warmer than ever.
There, can I have my AGW grant now please?

Yes, I performed some controlled temp tests and actually came to the same conclusion. I turned the heating on, left the thermometer near the radiator for a while. When it had warmed up I quickly ran outside with the thermometer and took the temperature. January was a cosy 20 odd degrees!!I too think this January was the warmest on record. Makes me laugh because they really are desperate now aren't they!
This is a re-hash of news already out and already analysed as far as it can be, so like Labour they're announcing old news and pretending it's new as this is apparently capable of fooling some people some of the time. The temperatrue they refer to is the monthly lower troposphere temperature, see UAH data on the website of Dr Roy Spencer. The discrepancy is due to a combination of El Nino and circulation patterns that have kept warmer maritime air over the seas from encroaching too far over land masses, which have remained cold in terms of surface temperatures and related weather conditions.
Spencer discussing January 2010 as the third warmest month and warmest January in the 32 year satellite record with interesting graphic I posted earlier showing the localised impact of El Nino affecting global averages

FFS, it gets better. Why the hell did I look at the BBC news page?!

Whaling releases more carbon, apparently. Christ on a bike!!

Don't forget this one...
So - a big iceberg that's been floating around since 1987 has dislodged a bigger iceberg and this is going to somehow block the production of very cold seawater.
The ice has not and will not melt, but just sit there and 'block' a current of super cold 'bottom water' from the sea-bed.
a) How does 'super cold' water sink when water is most dense at 4 deg C?
b) Why isn't this ice melting from all the warming?
c) Who writes this s
t?

This whole focus on "carbon carbon carbon" is getting more than just a little irritating. Carbon on its own - not dangerous.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8538...

The climate change debate is stupidly focusing on purely this one element to the detriment of others. its made out to be a simple situation - cut down on your carbon emissions, we'll save the planet. Like f

This looks convenient... Apparently it will cause colder winters in the North Atlantic, which will nicely explain away the lack of warming, allowing the CO2 train to keep on rolling.CO2 is still bad see - the iceberg is just hiding it.

Are you sure your density curve in (a) relates to salt water? So - a big iceberg that's been floating around since 1987 has dislodged a bigger iceberg and this is going to somehow block the production of very cold seawater.

I give you

This is a global measurement. There is a big world outside of snowy England.
Number of divs I hear saying "So much for Global warming" when it's a bit cold where they live for a week.
Before anyone flames me I'm not saying it's man-made or not. I'm not saying the press haven't blown it out of proportion. Just pointing out that just because we've had a crappy winter doesn't make that much difference in the big scheme of things.

Still doesn't explain how a single floating piece of frozen water can block a current of cold water on the sea bed though.

Check out the temps for the rest of the NH - cold, cold, coldNumber of divs I hear saying "So much for Global warming" when it's a bit cold where they live for a week.

To be fair I think most followers of this subject on PH are aware of that, the watts up with that blog has even coined a phrase for it, "Weather not Climate", I think most are just pointing out that the MSM declare every warm event as evidence of AGW and every cold event as weather or ignore it.Number of divs I hear saying "So much for Global warming" when it's a bit cold where they live for a week.

I think the recent snowfall in the US and Russia indicates this is happening further afield than 'snowy England'Number of divs I hear saying "So much for Global warming" when it's a bit cold where they live for a week.
