Things come in threes or so i'm told. Well I've had the flu over christmas, signed off work with a chest infection & now on tuesday i broke a bone in my right foot, slipped down some steps rushing for train. Yes I am a doofus. A Calcaneus fracture somewhere around the area of anterior talocalcaneal articulation (Aaarh the joys of a CD ROM X-ray & Google). Anyway my leg's in a back slab & goes into a cast upto my knee on Monday. Anyone got any advice? My fitness levels were slowly coming back & on day 3 of 6 weeks layed up the thoughts of muscle wastage & a Pistonheads jersey on order are mildly annoying. Anyone recommend any exercise I can do or what to expect from the physio after cast comes off? Yes i'm jumping the gun but want to get that jersey on!!!!!

Depends on your doc, but see one who understands your situation - ideally someone who runs or cycles. If they tell you to do nothing and let it heal - that's what you do - if it means you write this season off, then so be it - there is no point in doing further damage that will stick with you for life.
I did my Achilles right in the middle of last season - went to the physio and he said do nothing for 2 weeks and dial back the volume for a few weeks after that - meant missing out one of my target races and it was f
king tough to do with the bike sat there looking at me - but I did it because i trusted his advice and didn't want to have the injury plague me for ages.
Whatever you do, do not take any advice from an internet forum (i'm including myself and any posters above and below me in this) speak to your doctor, go to a private physio and get his opinion.

If you ask them to make the base of the cast a bit thicker then you could screw a cleat to it...
Humour aside: subject to medical advice - boring, I know - a turbo ought to at least give you a more or less risk-free way to get your heart rate up for a bit. Cast will get stinky, but then it's going to do that anyway.
Just try to ensure that the medical advice comes from someone who is not of the 'well you'll just have to stop playing then' variety.

Screw a cleat into the cast? There's a fine line between madness & genius, i've got to say i like your logic. On a serious note one of the Dr's at my surgery is a runner so can have a word with him. I must be getting some sort of workout just using the crutches i can feel it in my chest & stomach. Hey maybe some sit ups & push ups? But yes take it on board don't do any permenant damage.
