With the amount of applications going in for each advertised vacancy these days, calling up as well as sending your CV/application seems like a good way to mark yourself out a little. I want to start doing this (no interviews in 3 months frown) but what do you say? Over and above "just wanted to check you received my application" I find it hard to think of a reason to call.

Any ideas?

At my workplace I have noted that quite a few people call up the managers and have legnthy conversations about what the job entails BEFORE they apply.

Obviously it depends how busy the person is and how much they care - and whether the person you actually get to talk to is involved in the recruiting.

The larger the company the more difficult I guess.

What are you trying to achieve when you call?

Mainly I'm trying to make sure I stick in their mind, so when they get my CV they think "oh yes, he phoned up earlier, let's have a look". Just so I'm less anonymous than the other applicants, basically.

It depends on what type of job you're applying for. A lot of jobs aren't even advertised but are found by 'word of mouth' through a friend for example.
I'd suggest if it's a local company (with a general reception area) go and visit them with a copy of your CV and be dressed smartly.
A bit of iniatitive and enthusiasm goes a long way smile
