Online retailers - quick delivery
Discussion
So last night at 7pm I was on eBuyer looking for a PC part. I had the option of ordering for Friday (today, next day) or Monday. It was only £2 extra to have it for Friday.
As I was ordering at 7pm of Thursday I though it was optimistic to have it by the next day.
Anyway, it has just turned up at 4.30.
I checked the eBuyer website and saw it was with UPS by 12am and in my local depot by 6am.
How do they do it so quick? 24 warehouse? Is some of it automated?

I recently placed an order with Amazon just after 20:00 on a Friday, and was offered one month's free membership of their "Prime" service that gives you free upgrades to next day delivery (same method as any normal member but at zero cost)
Imagine the shock when it turned up at 07:30 the next day - on Saturdays here they tend to send out the Special Delivery items in a van (presumably so the posties can have a slightly later start) so they're always early on Saturdays

Ebuyer have a direct feed to our hub at Tamworth with negates the need for trunking to the collection depot. You can order as late as 11pm for next day delivery. The state of the art hub at Tamworth can sort 100,000 pkgs per hour so even arriving past midnight they can be sorted and out to the delivering depot by 4am
The Lone Wolf, careful with that Amazon prime member, as after the 30 day free trial has ended, it automatically renews it, cost £49. So unless you want to pay that, cancel it.

I used a free voucher to order some books on Amazon on Wednesday night and they all predicted dispatch by 26/02/10 at the earliest! I was shocked to find one of them on my doormat this morning! That seller definitely got a good review too
Amazon predict the date automatically if you buy from the marketplace. They tell sellers to ship within 2 days, I always try to post things next day and despite its slating the postal service is usually very good in this country.

For letters, not always so good from my experience.

I have had quite a lot of online stuff delivered next day.
If you are sending something RM Special Delivery on Friday and they ask if you want to pay extra for Saturday del, do not pay it
It will probably get delivered on Saturday anyway as the offices like to clear everything Saturday as Mondays are quite heavy for SD's and risk failing the 1pm deadline if they have too much to deliver.

It's only a way of extracting more cash out of you

Most courier hubs are located close to the motorway in this area. Four and a half hours in a trunker (approx 220 miles), gets the parcel to the local depot, usually before 6am. Add an hour to sort it, and another two for the van to get to you, and it is still only 9am.International stuff can be even more impressive, because it doesn't have to spend 3 hours waiting at airport security before it flies.
