Driver Tuition
Discussion
Castle Combe do a skid pan course if you are south / south west.
Hugh at >> www.Cadence.uk.com will organise a skid pan with driver tuition plus road skills.
Don Palmer will show your mate how to get it sideways and keep it sideways >> www.donpalmer.co.uk (maybe not so appropriate!)

Done at North Weald airfield in Essex. Very good car control stuff, so very different to IAM/Rospa which is more about the context of road driving. This is car control in general.
Done 5 days so far myself

Thanks guys,
My friends based nr Bristol so Castle Coombe might be a good option.I think it was more the skid pan type stuff he was after. The guys a pretty good driver in normal road conditions but having not spent anytime on track he is not used to dealing with being on the limit. The ice under one wheel just caught him out.

I wasn't impressed with the Castle Coombe skid pan session. It's better than nothing but I found Don Palmer's wet handling course much more useful (but more expensive). Don will teach you to know when you're getting close to the limit by the feel that you get through your backside. He'll also teach you about how to keep a car balanced. I didn't have a clue what was going on down at tyre level until I spent a day with Don. Doing an unintended 360 in my TVR years ago persuaded me to seek tuition. I've done lots of various courses and track days since then but if any of them is likely to save my life/car/pride then it'll be Don's (although my recent Ridedrive course comes close in terms of usefullness).
I guess I'm in the unique? position of having done both Don's (Driving Development) and Andrew's (1st Lotus/CarLimits) courses, so here's my twopenneth:
Don's course is much more intensive, but I was at the facilities at MIRA so I have no experience of what the facilities at Bruntingthorpe are like. Having a constantly irrigated environment and using the circles was v.revealing, and allows you far more limit time than any other experience I've had.
Andrew's course was very useful to me as a 'next step', I know I got more out of it than the other (3) people there, and I think part of that was Don's training. Because of the nature of the facilites at North Weald, you are learning something a little different, and there is not as much limit time, but more 'realistic' OMG! moments
I'd love to hear of anyone's experiences of Don's course at Bruntingthorpe as I'm thinking of doing that again...
