You do realise that the French do try to stop you going to most places and that every year old ones disappear in a wall of mesh fencing and banners.
That said I'd say there were worse ideas than looking here:-

Yep, spent many hours wandering around looking for new views, hence the question.Just wondering if there are any viewpoints that aren't on the official map but are accessible for those who don't mind a bit of a hike.

We spent a few hours there on the Beausejour side on the Saturday night in '09, and went back on the Sunday to watch the last few hours of the race there. It was pretty quiet then, but I'm expecting it to be much busier this year as word gets round...turbo-ww said:

Can you tell me what the criteria is for getting onto the marshall's list for Le Mans please? I am doing my first marshalling season this year but was thinking of doing this race sometime in the future. Is the application done through the AOC? This will be my 7th year running and I will just spectate again and put up with a week of lazing around and drinking before hand. It's tough but as they say, someone's got to do it....

As the form suggests other overseas events you need to obtain your own invitation. This is usually done by word of mouth to identify the right person to write to.
As for criteria, The main thing is experience. You will be expected to be able to wave flags, go out on circuit with cars going past in excess of 200mph - Not for the faint-hearted or novice.
Too late for this years LM BTW.
If you decide to go that route for 2011, PM me when you get the form. It's in French and you may need a hand. (Or not if your French is OK!)

That moment on the Mulsanne was one of my finest moments. I actually spoke to them in French first of all, and the seriously pissed one replied in beautiful broad Glaswegian. Which I was only too happy to continue in. Stunned does not do his expression justice.
J, T-ww is also one of the 106 crew, he just stays over on the outside, so tends not to meet scary big Oulton ogres in the woods.

Thanks very much. I have had a look at the Volunteers website and all is now clear. I will certainly bear you in mind if I do decide to go for it next year. You are right in thinking 12 days is the minimum for the British GP but I have heard that you need a few more years experience to be considered for that. Understanable as it the most high profile event of the year. It wouldn't do to have marshals making a fool of themselves on telly all over the world!

Thanks very much. I have had a look at the Volunteers website and all is now clear. I will certainly bear you in mind if I do decide to go for it next year. You are right in thinking 12 days is the minimum for the British GP but I have heard that you need a few more years experience to be considered for that.
