My sympathies - happened to me quite a few times. I hope that you hadn't left another job for it. Chalk it up to experience.
(As an aside - I once went for an interview in Kingston-upon-Thames - got there, interview went great etc then they found out I lived near Manchester - of course the agency had blanked out the contact detailss on my CV). No use - they needed someone local. Argh!

Just had word from company ( not agency ) 3 weeks after interview, that job no longer exists due to ecconomic situation. 2nd time its happened in last 6 months.
Pissed right off. Fuk.
Better than what happened to me, 3 months after interview I start the new job, 7 days later the company lays everyone off, 3 months after that its closed down. Better to hear while you can still stay at work rather than find yourself on the dole except of course you quit your last job...Pissed right off. Fuk.
At my last big corporate employer we withdrew offers from people who had already resigned their previous jobs. I know at least one of them wasn't able to go back to his old job.
I think the employment situation looks extememly wobbly - I thought it would pick up as the New Year started but even people who have hung on to iffy looking jobs for years seem be getting let go now.
