I've had a Garmin Edge 205 for a couple of years now and wouln't be without it. Mine's a pretty basic first gen unit, but i think the newer ones have all the mapping on board.

The Garmin Legend HCX looks great for the money. Free maps for it are readily available.

The GPS forum on YACF is great for all sorts of GPS nerdery and advice

Satmap Active 10. Had mine for over a year, used it to navigate from Holyhead to Chepstow over the course of 8 days. Gave it a charge every night, used it for 5+ hours every day. It never missed a beat. Battery life of 8+ hours with the LiPo pack, OS maps, decent sized screen, its got "drunk-buttons" so you can use it with thick gloves on.

Superb bit of kit. Frankly I havent seen anything that comes close. Garmin Oregon looks pretty good too though.

As weight and bulk is probably important to you, how about a smartphone? The latest Nokias are GPS enabled and can be used as a satnav.

Just a thought, as you'll probably be carrying a phone anyway.

Garmin Zumo. I had the 550. Comes loaded with all the European maps, is waterproof, and easy to operate.
Designed for motorbikes, so 1 touch (with gloves) operation is a doddle.

Ive read most of the reviews on Amazon ,

its a bit pricey , but the OS Satmap Active Bike

has the best reviews

and with the Bretagne map / South UK map , I can do a lot of touring in Brittany , its a great place to go for a cycle ride and if your down Saint Brieuc way you may bump into Bernard Hinault 5 times tour Champion

It appears to only come with 1:250,000 OS maps. Is that good enough for navigation?

I use 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 OS maps but for that satmap device they come on a SD card and cost £££
