This is 56 times larger in scope than the Haiti one. However, due to better buildings and preparedness, 182 people have been reported killed instead of 200,000. The big threat now is tsunamis along Pacific coast nations, including the state of Hawaii.

Hmmmm. If Winky had the intelligence of pond life, he would be redirecting any foreign aid money Britain has left to rush to the assistance of Chile. Could be a huge payback in good will when we need to use Chilean ports etc to support the Falklands.

Just heard that the tsunami wave is moving at jet plane speed toward Hawaii and should arrive by 11:00AM Hawaii time. The wave is predicted to be 7 feet tall. Evacuations are taking place. Hopefully that is a small enough wave to not devastate.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Director stated that the safe zone is only a short walk or drive away; hopefully, all will heed the warning.

Is 7 feet a big wave for Hawaii? I thought the surfers there will be waxing their boards as we type.

No, not size-wise; however, the physics of a tsunami as oppossed to a normal wave is very different. It will be moving so quickly and carrying such force that the danger can be be far worse.

A tsunami wave is proprtional to the dept of the water. Therefore, one would likely not even notive this wave if it passed them out to sea, only when closing on land, in shallower water, will the wave manifest itself.
Oz and Japan are also in the wave path after Hawaii.

If a wave has that much energy to reach Hawaii, then the East cost of New Zealand should be worried too.

Plus Fuji, American Samoa, and the Cook Islands.

Hell, Easter Island is only half the distance that Hawaii is from Chili.

Easter Island is expecting a possible wave as well and is planning precautionary evacuations. All Pacific coasts are in possible danger. More than one wave can materialize; therefore, when one passes, the danger may not be over.

Interesting article on the Tsunamis that are predicted.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8540742....

However many of the times mentioned in the report appear to have passed with no ill effects.

Japan braced for 3am and Hawaii for about 9.20pm (UK Times)

More to do with location and depth, I think you'll find.

Obama was just on, saying how "...we can't control Nature..."

Funny - I thought the whole CO2/MMUGW thing hinged on us being able to do just that...

"spectators are congregating near the coast to watch for the wave" according to news reports.

Darwin awards candidates.

The mind boggles.

here's an idea...

why not re-direct some of that aid we sling about, to Chilie, and perhaps some troops and military engineers to help re-build?

its not like they border a troublesome south american country full of upset spanish settlers...

It's somewhat overdue, fingers crossed it's a false alarm for them. Apparantly there's been something like 60 aftershocks in chile so far, some of them of pretty hefty magnitude.

If the sea level rises to the height of some of the cliffs they're watching from that'll be the least of their worries. From what I've seen the low lying stuff is clear bar one or two folks who haven't evac'd.
