M3 J5 friday night... Police Stop went a bit wrong?

Usually take the M3 to and from work (between J4 and J6) and got a call from a friend about 5 ish last night to say that if I was not on the M3 yet, to give it a wide birth, luckily I had gone across country so it was not an issue.

Apparently there were a couple of marked 3 series Police tourers on the hard shoulder, quite badly damaged, cannot imagine there collided under and circumstances other than a "stop"...
Curious to know what happened.. Anyone know?

I went past there at 5:30ish and it was all clear

Went past about 5pm and saw a golf had rear ended a Police E61, which in turn had then rear ended something larger. Was plenty of support there for them!
