I'm living in a rented property so i'm restricted to what i can do but the house backs onto a footpath, i suspect local kids are using the garden as a cut through.

We also had an attempted break in last week and i suspect they came in / left that way.

The current fence is strong and in good shape, it's about 5.5 foot high. i took a walk down the path at the back today and can see why my house would be a target / easy shortcut, because of the way the path and the gardens sit my fence is a lot lower than everyone elses.

What can i do to it legally and keeping it looking nice to put people off going over it?

I'll post some pics off my phone.

Add trellis to the top

It'll break when they try and climb over.

+1 - burglars etc dont like trellis because it wobbles and causes them problems. grow some rose or similar along it and the problem will disappear

I remember growing up in our private house which seemed to attract scrotes trying to steal stuff out the shed etc, until my stepdad installed barbwire all along the top of the fence. Looked a mess but kept the feckers out!

First picture uploaded, my fence is everything from the second post from the left to where it changes colour. it's difficult to get perspective of how it looks lower than the others

Broken glass is illegal now.

And I'm not sure barbed wire is legal for domestic use these days either.

Horrid black stuff that never dries. Put some on the top of your slats, they wont want this on their shell suits!

Get yourself a load of carpet tack strips then attach it both sides. Very cheap and very effective.

Nail carpet gripper rods along top of fence

I'd strongly suggest looking into what is and isn't legal before doing anything.

These would rust in a matter of weeks, surely?

+ another 1

Rosa "Kiftsgate" or "Rambling Rector" - quick growing and lots of big thorns that I wouldn't try to climb through however drunk I was.

That would get my vote. You can't put barbed wire etc up - if they hurt their ickle selves you'll be the one in court. The other option is to provide something jolly prickly for them to land on. Pyracantha is impregnable but takes a few years to establish. Berberis and hawthorn (Crataegus) are also options.

simple answer, the other side of my house..

this estate is weird in it's design, two roads meet where my house is but both are dead ends, my house is literally where the road would continue if it was a through road, so basically the two types going over my fence at thieves and people trying to get into the road without going all the way round.

this i like, with other things.

i'm aware i cant use barbed wire, i believe it has to be 9ft up or something, and glass, nails etc are a no no. a house we moved into a few years ago had carpet gripper on the top of the fence, totally illegal frown

i'm thinking that fence strip stuff, plus trellis and something growing. i understand i'm not going to stop the really determined but i want to make it as unappealing as possible but at the same time without it looking a mess.
