Stuck offshore for another week so doing some reading up on lens hoods. I have a petal shape hood for my Tamron 10-24mm but was considering getting one for my Canon 35mm f2 and possibly my Canon 55-250mm zoom as neither came with one.

Should I get a circular hood or a petal hood?

Can I fit a hood and a filter at the same time?

Petal hoods are usually for wide angle lenses as they fit the rectilinear shape of the image more closely. Having said that, I rarely use hoods and just use my hand as a shield if I notice loss of contrast - one less bit of plastic to get in the way.

Yep, these days hoods tend to fit to the lens barrel by external bayonet, leaving the filter thread free for, well, filters.
