OK, so with help from the Pistonheads crew, I've bought a refurb. MacBook Pro.Its arriving this week. It will only be used for internet, email, photo storage ( and maybe minimal manipulation) and music.

Do I need internet security and if so, which ones are recommended? A friend has suggested intego.

Battery. There was a thread about this recently, and if I recall correctly, the advice was to run it down 1 - 2 x to calibrate it, then leave it topped up and plugged in when in use at home. I will only use it for sofa surfing and only need the portability for holidays 1 -2 x / year.

iTunes. If I download my CD collection on to iTunes, will I be able to upload from iTunes back onto non Apple hardware. I have a Nokia 5800 mobile, and I would like to use that .

I've looked at the "Essential MAC software thread", but I'm not really a power user and I think the iLife suite should keep me occupied for a few months.

just so you know, I never managed to get my 5800 working with my mac as well as my pc. Nokia have come out with a utility for mac, but it is very cumbersome and often ddin't work at all for me. Give ti a google though, it's better than nothing

No need for 'internet security' other than common sense, and a strong password on your login account. By 'strong' - use numbers and symbols, and don't use words, and make it as long as feasibly rememberable.

If OS X asks you for your password, then *always* think 'why does it need my password' - if you're installing an Apple software update, then fair enough, but if you've just visited a dodgy web page and the system asks you to authenticate something, then you can simply say 'no' and the elevated privileges that the dodgy web page is asking for will be denied.

There aren't actually any of these exploits in the wild, but any malware that you accidentally run will *have* to ask you for a password if it wants to do anything nasty to the *system* - it's a Unix system and has proper user privilege separation.

The music will be stored in the iTunes > music folder, so you can just go there to copy files, folder, etc. Just remember that iTunes uses a library system

I like iLife. iMovie, iphoto, iTunes, etc, are all decent programs, and integrate very well with each other. You can use openoffice as an office suite. It is free.
