He does have things to gain by calling it early. At the moment the polls are the best they have been for him for ages, and it may well be the best chance he has. If he leaves it longer then there are all sorts of things that could crop up in the meantime, not least the first quarter economic figures. If those show we have gone back into recession then that will really affect him negatively.There have been several fairly unpleasant stories about him that have come out in the last few weeks, and there is always the possibility of more. He will have to face the Chilcot enquiry before the election if he waits, which will almost certainly show him in a bad light. If he calls it very soon there won't be time for him to appear before the election campaigns get under way.
On the other hand, Brown is a bottler - he didn't have the guts to do it last time he was about to and there is every possibility he will do the same this time.

1st week in June I think but if we go past the end of March I think the first & only practical date is 6th May.The other biggie that points to that is that its the local election day & Labour simply doesn't have enough cash to fight two campaigns.

I don't think that making big decisions is something he is capable of - that's his problem. He puts them off as long as he can and then blames someone junior if it goes wrong.
Of course if things turn out well he's right there grabbing all the glory.

That though is a minimum of 17 working days between the issuing of a writ to returning officers in each constituency - telling them to return an MP for the next Parliament - and the election itself.Not long.
