Couple of questions....on floor cleaning/sealing and cooling

I am in the process of removing and resealing the entire floor panels (see separate thread). The panel under the engine is not sealed but there appears to be some kind of grease sprayed on the chassis - what is it and does it need to be removed and replaced before the panel is put back on.

Also the aluminium panels are quite dirty and corroded in some parts around the edges where the rivets had been fastened. Is there a good chemical cleaner that you can recommend to at least clean off the corrosion and dirt. I have used Gunk which gives a basic clean but does not really touch the corrosion.

Also whilst I am asking questions - I am also doing the tunnel/brake cooling mods so will have no (maybe one) hoses to the heater box. The heater box inlets are therefore open and exposed - do they need closing off or could I just put some trumpet sock filters over them to stop anything being sucked in .

Final question - would you recommend on opening up the front air scoops and if so would you leave open of put some mesh across the front?

Is it Waxoyl? It may have been treated previously and it's quite common to 'overdo' it and the excess squidges out.

Most chemicals are quite aggressive on Aluminium. If you can't move the corrosion with a wire brush in a drill, do you have somewhere local that could bead blast them for you?

Haven't done it myself but remember reading here that you don't need pipes to the heater box but you do need to put some mesh on the intakes to stop it ingesting stones and cats and things.

Hi Dave , i used some tapered plastic bungs that Stella got me ..fitted perfectly !! (he might have some spares ) Yellowshed told me to open up front scoops to give me a better air flow down tunnel ect .

My Alloy engine panel i had powdercoated black ....looks great and easy to keep clean !!! fixed it back on with new black self tappers . might be worth taking it to a coating company to see what they can do. Simon

Hi Dave.

I replaced my floor panel with a slightly thicker 2mm sheet of ally at Xmas for the princly sum of about 70 quid, worth thinking about as some of the corrosion can let water through.

Thanks for the feedback and great suggestion Simon - I have a local company who can remove any corrosion with an aluminium oxide blast () and then powder coat the entire floor with a military approved marine grade satin black.

Sounds just the ticket .

aluminium oxide will actually protect the metal underneath

leave it on imho

you could paint it with zinc paint

Maybe I am being stupid here but presumably you still need air to be pulled into the heater so blocking off the 4 holes would be a no no. I can see sense in some tapered bungs that reduce the aperature but still allow air to flow. Likewise some filter material would also work? - it should be relatively dry in there

Hi Mate ,other 2 holes are open with ducting to the front scoops ,guess i could have left them open but was worried about hot air being pulled into the heater box .

I started to take mine off tonight. If I am powder coating the floor panels then I may as well get these done at the same time although I will probably do them blue to match the car.
