I have a small pewter jug which looks tarnished/blotchy in places. Silver polish (Duraglit wadding) makes the surface a bit shinier but doesn't remove the tarnish - do I have to find 'pewter polish' or will something else do the trick?

Pewter is supposed to go matte the older it gets. Generally the handle or wherever you grab it goes first and then slowly the rest will follow. It will take years for this to happen though.

True - this jug isn't the usual 'tankard' type matt pewter though, it seems to have quite a shiny finish on it, it's as if the blotchiness is underneath.

Underneath it says 'Metawa Holland Real Pewter' - it's very much like this but not so elongated: http://cgi.ebay.com/METAWA-HOLLAND-PITCHER-94-REAL...

Even tankards start out life all shiny.

All you need to know on cleaning pewter. There is also a 'how to make your own pewter cleaning stuff' on there. Good luck.
