Protect my Wireless Network please
Discussion
I need to turn on a basic level of protection for my wireless network at home - at the moment anyone can access it.
I have a PC that connect to the router wirelessly and an xbox that is wired in.
I'm running windows 7 - so when i select the network and view wireless properties there is a security tab.
In this tab i can select what type of security I'd like - which should i select?
When i select one other options are displayed - including network security key - do i need to create one or do i just do this by typing one into the box??
I odn't want aything over the top or complicated - i just want a very basic level of protection
Thanks for the help
Cheers

you will need to access the router to set up the wireless security in it as well as the tabs you have found. Router, Xbox and computer will need to have the same settings
Warning! I recommend doing this via a wired computer, since you will be stopping conx to the wireless at some point.
You should have the details within the documentation for the router, but if not try accessing it via:
http://192.168.0.1
If thst gets to your router you will need to enter the user name and password to allow you to change the defaults.
If no-one has been there before, there's a good chance it's set at ADMIN and PASSWORD.
Once you are at the router set up find the wireless security settings and change them there.
If you are unsure of what you are doing, probably best to get someone you trust in to help.

Basically anyone can log onto your router to access the internet and any files/printers you have shared. There are proberbly programs around that will let them access your PC also.
Also if you router is using the standard password then they can actually lock you out of your own router

You need to access http://192.168.2.1 for your router's settings. As Paul mentioned there may be a default password, then once you've logged in, as he says, try to find the wireless settings page.
You want to select WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK protection, type in a password (you will enter this in Windows to connect), and perhaps change the name of the network. This will give you the level of protection you want, enough to prevent neighbours from connecting.
There may be more advanced options, but you don't need to worry about those, to be frank, even those are no obstacle to those with knowledge. That said, wpa affords the protection an average user should have.

I know this site here:

looks a bit messy but it's well worth having a read and testing your security from the outside with the tests on there.
