I understand both the above posts but I think each falls into the trap of making straight line performance the holy grail! Of course that's a significant part of what makes an M-car but in my experience things like the steering and chassis are better sorted than in the standard offerings as well. As a result of a new job and a different mileage profile I'm thinking of changing my M3CS and last weekend I had a run in a E92 335i with DCT; in straight line performance it was right there with the M3 but on twisty and undulating roads it wasn't! That doesn't mean I won't end-up buying one because it may suit my needs better than the M3; however, I won't be kidding myself it's as good a driver's car just because it's as quick in a drag race!

I made a massive mistake, brought the new shape 320D M Sport Coupe and thought it would satisfy me and that I would have my motorbike for my fix, what a mistake, yep the car looks good but when I start it up its so uninvolving, really regret buying it.
Was due to look at an M3 cab weekend just gone but it had sold by the Sat morning.
Don't buy the 335 or 330 yep you'll have the new shape BMW but you will also just have a bog standard tractor under the hood.

Nearly as important as the M engine (or maybe more), is having the power sent to the back wheels with a proper differential.
A mechanical, or electro-mechanical diff is disappointingly rare these days in anything but halo top-of-the-range cars. A panicing computer grabbing brake discs & cutting spark/fuel is never going to be a substitute for "enthusiastic" driving.
