e39 540i Manual advice???

I need some advice on the E39 540i. I have browsed lots of forums and have test drove alot of different cars and I think the 540i seems like great bang for the buck. I also want a Manual transmission car.
How much do these cost? I want to spend 3-4k, ideally circa 3k. What issues should I look out for. Anybody selling one? they seem rare.
