just pulled on to the drive and as I turned off the engine I heard a little pop at the front, I immediately started the engine again, it turned over then smoke came out of the engine (top left of engine bay - if you were standing in front of the car).

i'm going to give it a try in about 20 mins - typical hot starting problem - and maybe that's were the problem is..starter motor?

Opposite to the Swirl pot, and the oil filler cap then... above the pedal-box.. hmmm...

Is the rocker cover gasket on that side leaking..? If you've got some oil somewhere getting hot it could start smoking (esp if it gets onto an exhaust manifold). I can't for the life of me think of anything else simple and non-scarey that could be creating smoke !!??

If I were you i'd track it down... as they say, no smoke without ...

Cheers,
Matt.

just tried to start it - cock all - fuel pump is priming though. Opened the bonnet and everything seems ok, no leaks (non visible anyway)...

Sounds like an electrical short. Has one of the pluglead extensions popped off the plug and is lying on the exhaust or may have just loosened and be shorting the HT?

A friend of mine had a starter stick engaged. Fire eminated from the starter. Not good.

I presume that's what you mean by "starter buzzes when turned off"?

I had something similar last year. Turned out to be a couple of drops of power steering fluid dripping onto the exhaust manifold. Thought my engine had blown!!!
