For all those PHers who have had to go to such an event..a few questions if that is OK.

What sort of things impressed you at said wedding fayre (cake wise) - freebies, information, presentation, what was on show - that sort of thing?

What cake related things were you hoping to leave with?

I'm in the process of sorting a stand out and even though I know cake...I'm very lost with the rest of it. There are lots of ideas but I'm not sure what should be used - and unfortunately I've had to jump into this rather last minute as the place I'm going to only has one event a year and it's in 3 weeks. There are no local events before this date to go and have a look at.

Thank you!!

Have a couple of examples decorated to catch the eye, and laid out in a nice presentation. (They don't even need to be cakes underneath, that'll keep your costs down.)

Have some samples of the actual cakes to taste, with plain icing on. (A couple of places have done fruit, sponge and chocolate cake.)

Maybe something like a photo album of things you've done before, as inspiration for those who get that far.

Be ready to give lots of cake samples to bored blokes who were dragged along. smile

IIRC no freebies, just photo album with cakes,(you assume they made them!) a cake or 2 for display and business cards!
We got ours from Chockwocckydoodah (or something like that!) they gave some samples away when we visited their shop but were still quite mean, IMO.

Free samples will pull people in.

Make your stand simple but attractive and informative and dont take the piss with prices.

So would more free bits of cake be a good starting point?

I've got a few sample tiered cakes to take (foam not actual cake but that doesn't matter as you're not eating those!) and a tower of cupcakes (real ones this time - someone will eat them afterwards!)

For samples to eat - a tray of cake slices (diddy ones with all the fillings icings etc) of fruit, sponge and choc (and perhaps one other) and a tray of mini cupcakes. Along with that a few glasses of something bubbly to try with the cake. There is far more cake planned than can possibly be eaten but I'd rather have too much (there are many people to take it off my hands) than be left with nothing to give out.

Literature wise - fliers with contact details etc and a portion guide and examples of things to inspire your design and a bit of history, some 10% off vouchers (for the really nice people tongue out) for birthday cakes and other orders beforehand and many many business cards. Oh and some photos of cakes.

Oh yes, lots and lots of cake...

Oddly enough -cake dummies can actually cost more than the bleeding cake to make, but they do last a lot longer wink

I think bubbly is a good idea to help wash the cake down - just use small shot glasses perhaps to keep the volume (cost!) down.

Have a sign stating that you charge based on the 'cake' part, not the 'wedding' part.

Turn up in a cakemobile.

As an aside, why are there not funeral cakes? Wake cakes? Semi serious question.

True, I guess.

But when we got married two years ago, some places were taking the absolute piss with their pricing.

Shh. Don't tell everyone! This is something I'm going in to - reliable service, delicious cakes and sympathetically done. I've got a range lined up already. (and yes I'm being utterly serious)

It is a very sad time, but why can't there be something utterly lovely at the wake afterwards? A slice of beautifully iced delicious cake.

And no I don't take the piss with prices. You pay for the cake - a 4 tiered birthday cake will be exactly the same price as a 4 tier wedding cake. However, if people want something very intricate then they will have to pay - but that goes for whatever the occasion is.

Aren't you going to target the Gypsy market after that programme on TV the other day? You could probably double your prices if you get the marketing right.

Great idea (I would say that). Seriously, best of luck.

How very, very true! When booking ours I had to walk away from the discussion at one point before I smacked someone!

The thing I would be looking to do at such an event is to give an impression of absolute solid long term reliabilty. It's all too easy for people with a talent for cake making and decorating to start up, take orders for cakes, and then lose interest or have stuff (sick children, divorce, loss of premises etc) preventing them from completing the order on time.

Someone suggested that last night. We shall see. Not entirely sure I want to, but open to all suggestions currently.

They were eating sausage and chips!

What cake would they have? A Battenburg in Burberry colours?!

Shall I just put a list of everything I've had to pay out in the last week to show that I'll have to be doing this well after I'm dead to recoup it? wink

How would you like to see reliability in the long term being presented?
